A Camry Hybrid with a tired 12V aux that masked itself as a 'flat key fob'

Why we always load-test the 12V on a hybrid

On a Toyota hybrid, the 12V aux doesn't crank the engine — it powers the computers that close the contactors to the traction pack. When the aux is weak, the car simply refuses to 'READY'. Owners often blame the key fob, the immobiliser, or 'electrical gremlins' for months before someone tests the right battery.

What the inspector found

  • Hybrid traction pack: 94% SoH, well within healthy band for build year — no concern.
  • 12V aux load test: 187CCA against a 410CCA rating — failed.
  • Resting voltage 11.8V after 6 hours sitting — should be 12.4V minimum.
  • Two stored fault codes for low system voltage during start sequence.
  • Inverter coolant level and condition fine. No leaks at the eCVT.
  • Service history: aux battery never replaced in 7 years (Toyota interval is 4–5 years).

Outcome

Buyer presented the report and a Toyota Burwood quote for the aux replacement plus a system reset. Seller agreed to $23,090 — $1,400 off, comfortably more than the $720 repair. Buyer fitted the battery the same week. No further issues.

"It wasn't a huge fault. But the report turned 'trust me' into a quote on letterhead, and that was worth more than the discount."
