Timing chain stretch
A common failure mode on VW/Audi 2.0 TFSI, Ford Ranger 3.2L and Nissan QR25 engines.
Unlike a timing belt (replace every 100k), a timing chain is supposed to last the life of the engine. Some engine families don't — chain stretch causes rattle on cold start and eventually catastrophic engine damage. Repair cost: $3,500–$6,500. On a PPI we listen for the cold-start rattle and read crank/cam correlation data.
