BYD Atto 3 and Seal — what we see on used examples in Sydney
BYDs are everywhere on Sydney roads now and the first wave is hitting the used market. Here's what's holding up and what isn't.
BYD launched in Australia in mid-2022 with the Atto 3. By 2026 we're seeing the first wave of 3-year-old examples and lease returns. Build quality has been better than the cynics expected — but there are platform-specific things to check that are not on a standard ICE checklist.
Battery — the Blade LFP
Both Atto 3 and Seal use BYD's own LFP Blade pack. LFP chemistry tolerates 100% daily charging far better than NMC, and degradation curves so far look excellent — most 3-year-old examples we test return state-of-health above 95%.
- Always insist on an AVILOO or equivalent SoH test — BYD's own dashboard 'health' indicator is not granular enough.
- Check charge history if available: did the previous owner DC fast-charge every session? LFP handles it, but the contactor and HV connectors don't love it.
- Cold-weather range loss is real even on LFP — expect 12-18% in a Sydney winter morning, more in Blue Mountains owners.
Software and infotainment
- 1.Rotating screen: confirm it rotates smoothly and locks. Stuck-screen failures need a dealer visit.
- 2.Updates: check the OTA version. Pre-Jan 2024 firmware had multiple known bugs (CarPlay dropouts, phantom braking).
- 3.Voice assistant: a known quirk — listens to FM radio and randomly activates climate. Mostly a firmware fix by now, confirm.
- 4.App pairing: BYD app requires a transfer when the car changes hands. Ask the seller to do this BEFORE you collect the car.
Common physical issues
- Atto 3 rear hatch alignment — check both gaps top and bottom, panel sag is common.
- Seal rear glass — the panoramic roof has had two production-quality batches; check carefully for delamination or whistling.
- Charge port door — actuator failure on 2023 Atto 3. Confirm it opens both from the app and the button.
- 12V auxiliary battery — Atto 3 has had multiple 12V-flat-no-start cases. If the car has been sitting on the lot more than 6 weeks, replacement is wise.
Common questions
Will I get parts in 5 years?
Likely yes — BYD now sells more cars in Australia than Mazda in some months. Wreckers are starting to appear; OE parts are stocked at Eagers and BYD dealer network.
Is the Seal better than a Model 3?
Different cars. The Seal rides more softly, has better build feel in the cabin; the Model 3 has more efficient powertrain and the Supercharger network. Used pricing is now within 10% of each other in Sydney.
