BMW 3 Series (F30 + G20) — the prestige sedan that bankrupts the wrong buyer

Buying used Euro is a different sport. Here's what to check on a 2014-2024 BMW 3 Series before you fall in love with the badge.

BMW 3 Series is the most heart-over-head purchase we see. The cars themselves are great — the running costs are where buyers go bankrupt. F30 (2012-2018) and G20 (2019+) have specific failure modes you must check for.

F30 / F35 (2012-2018) checks

  1. 1.N20 4-cylinder timing chain — known stretch issue pre-2015. We scan for the camshaft correlation DTC. Replacement is $4,500.
  2. 2.N20 oil filter housing gasket — leaks at 80-100k km. $850.
  3. 3.Water pump (electric) — fails at 100-130k km. $1,100.
  4. 4.VANOS solenoid noise at idle — common, $500 fix.
  5. 5.ZF 8HP gearbox service — BMW say 'lifetime fluid'. It isn't. $400 service every 80k km saves a $6k gearbox.
  6. 6.Run-flat tyre wear — uneven from underinflation. Check spec sheet matches what's fitted.

G20 (2019-2024) checks

  1. 1.B48 4-cylinder turbo — much improved over N20 but check for oil pan gasket weep ($1,400 with subframe drop).
  2. 2.Battery registration — replacing the battery without coding causes electrical gremlins. Verify last battery change was coded.
  3. 3.Adaptive headlights — laser modules are $4,500 each and fail in Sydney heat. Check operation at night, no error codes.
  4. 4.Wheel alignment after kerb strike — G20 control arms bend easily. Pull crash data.
  5. 5.iDrive 7 software update level — older versions had Apple CarPlay dropouts.

Service history is everything

A BMW with full BMW dealer service history is worth $4,000-$8,000 more than the same car with 'log book' independent service. The history proves recalls were done and fluids were correct. No history = walk.

M Sport vs Luxury Line vs base

  • M Sport: stiffer ride, harder on bushings, but biggest resale.
  • Luxury Line: softer, less abused, undervalued on resale.
  • Base (320i without packs): bargain of the lineup if you're not bothered by cloth seats.

Common questions

Are BMWs really that bad to own?

No — but they punish neglect. A serviced BMW is reliable. A neglected one is a money pit. Budget $1,500-$2,500/yr in maintenance from year 5 onwards.

Petrol or diesel for Sydney commuting?

Petrol. The 320i and 330i are the smart picks. Diesel only if you're commuting Sydney to Wollongong daily.
