Toyota LandCruiser Prado Buyer's Guide Sydney: 150-Series and 250-Series Watch-Outs Before You Sign

The Prado 150 (2009–2024) and the all-new 250 (2024+) share a name and almost nothing else mechanically. Here's what to check on each — DPF, front timing chain, front diff, and the 250's new 8-speed auto quirks.

The Prado is the most cross-shopped premium 4WD in Sydney. Families want the seven seats, tradies want the towing capacity, and the resale numbers make even used dealers salivate. But there are three very different Prados on the market right now and the checks vary dramatically between them.

The three Prados you'll actually see for sale

150-Series 1KD-FTV (2009–2015) — the ones to be careful with

The 3.0L 1KD-FTV is a strong engine that suffers when neglected. In Sydney's stop-start suburbs, DPF blockages are the number one call-out. The classic pattern: family SUV used for school runs, DPF never gets hot enough for a full regen cycle, warning light comes on, previous owner ignores it, next owner inherits a $3,500 problem.

  • Check the DPF regen light history in the OBD-II log. If regen has been forced more than 5 times in the last 1,000 km, that DPF is on borrowed time.
  • Injector 'chatter' at idle — a distinct top-end tick — often means an injector is starting to hang. 1KD injectors are ~$650 each and there are four.
  • Look for oil dilution on the dipstick — if it smells of diesel, incomplete regens are pushing fuel into the sump.

150-Series 1GD-FTV (2015–2024) — the safer buy

The 2.8L 1GD-FTV replaced the 1KD in the 2015 facelift and was updated again in 2020 for 150 kW / 500 Nm. It's a significantly more refined engine. Real-world issues we see on 100,000+ km examples:

  • Timing chain stretch usually appears around 150,000–180,000 km if serviced late. Listen for a distinctive rattle on cold start that fades within 3 seconds.
  • EGR carbon build-up. Adds a rough idle and reduced throttle response — a clean and re-map service in Sydney runs $600–$900.
  • Front diff pinion seal leaks on cars that have towed a caravan or boat regularly. Watch the driveway for drops.
  • The 2015–2019 facelift also had a pre-DPF-update software revision — the seller's most recent service invoice should show the reprogramming completed under Toyota TSB.

250-Series (2024+) — the new one

The 250-Series moved to Toyota's new TNGA-F ladder-frame platform (shared with the LandCruiser 300 and Lexus GX). Same 1GD-FTV engine block as the late 150s but with a 48-volt mild-hybrid assist and a new 8-speed automatic replacing the outgoing 6-speed.

  • 8-speed auto is smooth in cruise but the first year saw a small number of TSB updates for shift-flare between 3rd and 4th under load. Confirm the buyer has the latest transmission software revision on the last service invoice.
  • Electric power steering (replacing hydraulic on old 150) is significantly lighter — some buyers coming from a 150 mistake it for vagueness. Not a fault, but test-drive to be sure you like it.
  • New Multi-Terrain Select and disconnecting sway bar (upper trims): make sure both cycle and actually engage during test drive.
  • As of 2026 there's not enough field data yet to call out long-term problem areas — anyone claiming otherwise is guessing.

Towing and setup checks (relevant to any Prado)

  • Aftermarket tow bar rating: 3,000 kg on 150, 3,500 kg on 250. Check the plate on the bar — some cheaper aftermarket bars are rated lower than the chassis capacity.
  • Trailer brake controller wiring under the driver's kick panel: if fitted, it should be tidy. Butchered wiring is a re-do.
  • GVM upgrade certificate: any Prado with heavy bull bar, roof rack and drawer system needs a compliance sticker. No sticker = fine risk plus insurance problem.
  • Long-range fuel tank installations: check for weeping seams underneath.

Sydney-specific things to check

  • Coastal Sydney (Northern Beaches, Sutherland Shire): salt-air corrosion on the differential housings and rear brake lines is common on 10+ year 150s.
  • Western Sydney tradie use: heavy loads and long freeway commutes wear front suspension bushes faster than average.
  • School-run 150s from the Inner West and Lower North Shore: short-trip usage kills DPFs — always ask the second question, "what was it used for weekly?"

What we recommend booking

Any Prado over $35,000 in Sydney warrants an Elite ($449) inspection — the DPF, injector and timing chain checks alone justify the step up from Comprehensive. Our inspectors carry a Toyota-specific diagnostic app that pulls DPF regen history in a form the generic OBD-II scanners can't.

Common questions

150-Series or 250-Series — which is the better used buy in 2026?

A well-serviced 2020–2023 150-Series 1GD-FTV is the sweet spot right now: the engine is proven, values have settled, and parts are widely available. The 250-Series is still too new to price at a discount.

Is the 3.0L 1KD ever worth buying?

Only if service history is unimpeachable and the price reflects the risk. Below $22,000 with full history, sure. Above that, step up to a 1GD.

Do you inspect Prados in the Blue Mountains?

Yes — we cover greater Sydney including Springwood, Katoomba and out to Lithgow for 4WD inspections. Book same-day or next-day.
