Mazda CX-5 2017-2024 — the SUV most likely to be honest, and where to look anyway

Best-selling family SUV in Australia. Known issues are minor but specific — here's the five things that catch buyers out on a used CX-5.

Mazda CX-5 has been Australia's top-selling mid-size SUV for years and the second-generation (2017+) is the one most buyers are now looking at used. It's mostly a clean book — but five issues recur often enough to be checks worth doing.

1. SCBS (Smart City Brake Support) sensor fog

Front windscreen-mounted sensor mists up in Sydney humidity. Displays as 'i-ACTIVSENSE temporarily unavailable'. Usually fixed with sensor recalibration ($300) but check it doesn't trigger phantom braking on the road test.

2. AWD coupling unit weep (AWD models)

Look at the rear differential coupling — oily residue indicates seal failure. $1,400 to rebuild. Affects 2017-2019 mostly.

3. Petrol high-pressure fuel pump (2.5T turbo)

Turbo CX-5s had a recall for HPFP failure causing limp-mode. Check VIN with Mazda Australia. If unactioned, get it done before purchase.

4. Paint thickness on bonnet (Soul Red Crystal)

Soul Red Crystal Metallic uses a thin tri-coat. We measure with a depth gauge — under 100 microns suggests previous repair. Stone chip the size of a fingernail = $400+ to fix correctly.

5. Sunroof drain blockage

Sunroof drains run to the wheel arches and clog with leaves. Symptom: wet carpet in front footwells after rain. $0 to clear if caught, $1,500+ for a soaked headliner and corroded ECU if not.

Petrol or diesel?

The 2.5L petrol is the safer used buy. The 2.2L diesel (Sky-Activ-D) was discontinued in Australia in 2020 due to DPF issues in city use. The 2.5T turbo petrol is fast but thirsty and the fuel pump risk above lives there.

Common questions

Is the i-ACTIVSENSE worth it?

Yes for highway driving in NSW. The radar cruise + lane keep is one of the better systems in this price bracket.

Best trim for resale?

GT-SP (2021+) holds value best — heated/cooled seats, head-up display, premium audio. Adds about $4-5k over base on resale.
