Toyota HiLux 2015-2023 buyer's guide — what to check before you buy
DPF nightmares, dual-mass flywheel rattle, leaking diff seals. Australia's best-selling ute has known issues — here's the lot.
The 8th-generation HiLux (2015-2023, GUN126R chassis) is the most-inspected ute in our Sydney workload. Most are fine; the bad ones are very bad. Here's the eight checks we run on every HiLux that comes through.
1. DPF (diesel particulate filter) condition
HiLux DPFs blocked at 80,000-120,000 km on city-driven utes. Toyota extended the warranty to 7 years for many affected VINs. We scan the DPF soot/ash load — over 60% ash means a $2,500-$4,000 replacement is coming.
2. Injector seal weep at #4 injector
Black sooty residue around the injector base = blow-by past the copper washers. Easy to miss; expensive to ignore (it causes head corrosion). $1,200 to reseal.
3. Dual-mass flywheel rattle (manual only)
Idling in neutral with foot off clutch — listen for a metallic 'castanets' rattle. DMF replacement = $2,800-$3,500 with clutch.
4. Front diff pinion seal leak (4WD)
Look up under the front diff — oily film on the pinion housing. $450 fix if caught early, $1,800 if the bearings are damaged.
5. Lower ball joints
HiLux ball joints have a known failure pattern around 120,000 km. We pry-test on the hoist. $450 per side and a Pink Slip fail.
6. Rust under the rear tub (NSW coastal)
Lift the floor mat over the tow-bar mount and check inside the chassis rail. Northern Beaches HiLuxes especially.
7. ECU history — Stage 1 tune?
We scan for ECU rewrite events. A tuned HiLux is a voided-warranty HiLux with stressed timing chain and turbo. Walk or discount $4,000.
8. Tow-bar wiring & chassis weld
Cheap tow-bar installs splice into the trailer-lights harness and cause CAN-bus faults. Look for OEM Toyota tow-bar — the harness goes into a dedicated socket.
Which model year to buy
- Avoid: 2015-2017 (most DPF complaints, pre-improvement injectors).
- Sweet spot: 2019-2021 (revised DPF software, facelift, still pre-price-bubble).
- Strong: 2022-2023 (8-speed auto, much-improved diesel calibration).
Common questions
How long does a HiLux engine last?
1GD-FTV will go 300,000-400,000 km if serviced correctly. The drivetrain typically outlasts the body in coastal NSW.
Manual or auto?
Auto. The 6-speed auto (and 8-speed in late models) is more reliable than the manual DMF, holds resale better and is easier to drive in Sydney traffic.
