Three things shape cars here. The pass, which cooks brake fluid and rotors on the way down and loads cooling systems and transmissions on the way up. New-estate first-resale cars, bought new a few years ago and now selling with the first set of age-related faults. And Lake Illawarra and the coast, which put salt air over everything and boat trailers behind a great many vehicles.
We measure pad and rotor thickness against the manufacturer's minimum, test for the pulsing that indicates heat-scored rotors, assess brake fluid condition for moisture, check caliper slides for seizing, pressure-test the cooling system, verify both fan stages and watch thermostat behaviour through warm-up. A car that regularly does the pass with old brake fluid is a car with a soft pedal waiting to happen.
We check fluid condition and colour, feel for flare and delay, test for CVT shudder and dual-clutch judder where relevant, and scan for stored temperature, ratio and slip faults, because a loaded climb up the pass is the hardest work an automatic ever does.
Cars bought new for the estates a few years ago are now selling for the first time, often as ex-novated-lease or ex-demonstrator vehicles. We verify VIN and compliance, check for money owing, look for fleet or lease service stamps and decal marks, and assess driver-assistance calibration on cars that have had windscreens replaced.
The highway yards restock from Sydney and interstate wholesale. We check provenance, take paint-depth readings under the forecourt polish, read tyre date codes under the tyre shine, and check readiness monitors to see whether fault codes were cleared just before sale.
Lake Illawarra is next door and a lot of vehicles here tow to it. A used tow ball sends us to the transmission fluid, cooling system, rear suspension and driveline, and to the rear underbody for boat-ramp salt corrosion on the chassis rails, tow bar mounts and rear brake lines.
Salt air corrodes brake lines, subframes and sill seams from underneath, and heavy escarpment rain puts water through low-lying cars. We inspect the underbody on every car and check carpets, seat rails, spare wheel well and connectors for water ingress.
A car owned for fifteen years in the older streets can be years overdue on brake fluid, coolant, transmission fluid and timing belt. We check the record against dates, flag anything due by time, and read every tyre's date code.
