Local conditions

What is specific about buying here

A lot of the stock is not local. Highway yards restock from Sydney and interstate wholesale auctions, so a car wearing a local plate surround may have spent its life as a fleet vehicle somewhere else entirely. The cheap end of the market is very cheap, which is exactly the bracket where a single repair can exceed the purchase price. And the area sits low and close to the water, so both flooding and salt are genuine risks.

Flood and water-damage indicators

This is the check we take most seriously here. We lift carpets and inspect the underlay, look under and behind the seats, pull the spare wheel well, extend the seatbelts fully to look for a tide line, inspect under-dash and door-loom connectors for green corrosion, check seat-rail bolts, look for silt in the boot channels and heater box, and note unusually new carpet in an otherwise tired car. Electrical faults from water damage are effectively unfixable in a cheap car.

Timing chains and belts on high-kilometre budget cars

Cheap cars are cheap because of what is due on them. We listen for chain rattle on a cold start, scan for cam and crank correlation faults, and check the service history for a belt or chain replacement against both kilometres and years. On an interference engine this single check can be worth the entire cost of the inspection.

Ex-fleet, ex-rental and ex-rideshare histories

Fleet and rental cars are usually serviced but always hard-driven, and rideshare vehicles accumulate enormous city kilometres with heavy idling. We look for decal shadows on paint and glass, floor and pedal wear inconsistent with the odometer, interior wear patterns, phone-mount marks on the windscreen and dash, and service history stamped in another state.

Accident repair quality at the value end

We take paint-depth readings on every panel and report them. On lower-value cars, repairs are frequently done with filler, second-hand panels and no correction of the underlying structure. Overspray on rubbers, mismatched panel date stamps, replacement headlights and crush marks on the rails behind the bumper are all photographed and explained.

Coastal corrosion underneath a tidy body

Brake and fuel lines, subframes, suspension mounting points, exhaust hangers, sill seams and boot floor are all inspected from below. We are explicit about which corrosion is cosmetic and which is structural or safety-critical, because those two things are worth very different money.

Brakes, batteries and tyres neglected on low-use cars

Second and student cars sit for long periods. That produces perished and flat-spotted tyres regardless of tread, pitted rotors, seized caliper slides and handbrake cables, and deep-cycled batteries near the end of their life. We report the age of every tyre from its date code, not only its remaining tread.

Air conditioning that has quietly stopped working

Common on older cars here and easy to miss on a cool-weather test drive. We measure vent output temperature with a gauge, check compressor engagement and inspect the condenser, which sits at the front of the car and corrodes early this close to the water.

Straight answers

What a mobile inspection can't tell you.

A pre-purchase inspection in Fairy Meadow removes most of the risk in a used-car purchase. It does not remove all of it, and you should know where the edges are before you book.

  • We do not dismantle the engine, remove the gearbox or pull interior trim, so faults only visible during disassembly can't be ruled out. On Comprehensive and Elite, the engine undertray is removed where fitted, safely accessible and permitted.
  • We work at the vehicle's location, not on a hoist. Underbody checks are done on portable ramps where safe and permitted; seized fasteners, unsafe access or seller refusal are recorded as inspection limitations.
  • A cold-start assessment is only possible if the seller leaves the engine untouched before we arrive. If the car has been warmed up, we record that in the report.
  • The road test runs on public roads at legal speeds, so it can't reproduce every intermittent fault or a fault that only appears under load or after long distances.
  • A PPSR check reports what is registered against the VIN on the day. It cannot show unreported damage or work done off the books.
  • The report describes the vehicle's condition on the day of inspection. It is not a warranty and not a valuation guarantee.
