Pre-purchase car inspection in Kingsford.

Kingsford has two used-car markets stacked on top of each other. One is the university: thousands of students cycling through cheap cars on a semester timetable, bought in a hurry and sold in a hurry. The other is the trade: this part of the eastern suburbs has been home to taxi and hire-car drivers for generations, and their vehicles come onto the market with kilometres that would frighten most buyers. Both markets produce cars that look ordinary in a listing and are anything but. A student car with a fresh detail can be a genuine bargain or a machine three overdue services from failure. An ex-taxi hybrid with four hundred thousand kilometres can be the best-maintained car on the street or a shell held together by its last service. We come to the car, complete a structured inspection, run a professional multi-module diagnostic scan, road test it properly and hand you a written, photographed report on the spot with a plain verdict and costed repairs. We do not sell cars and the seller pays us nothing.

Local conditions

Students, taxis and street parking

Very few cars in Kingsford live in a garage. They park on Anzac Parade side streets, they get bumped, they sit in the sun, and the salt from the beaches a few minutes away settles on them all year. Add a cheap end of the market that runs on deferred servicing and a trade end that runs on extreme kilometres, and the inspection needs to work out which kind of car it is looking at before it can judge it.

Ex-taxi and ex-hire vehicles

An ex-taxi is not automatically a bad buy, but it must be priced as one. We look for the indicators: kilometres far beyond the car's age, a plated or de-plated roof, drilled holes in the dash and console from meter and camera fitment, worn driver's seat and pedals, rear-door and seat wear from passengers, and service history from a fleet workshop. On hybrid ex-taxis we test the high-voltage battery independently.

Student cars run on deferred servicing

Budget cars accumulate invisible debt. We check oil and coolant condition, brake fluid, filters, and look for the sludge and staining that say the engine has run low on oil or coolant. We listen for timing chain rattle on a cold start and check whether a belt-driven engine has had its belt replaced.

Street-parking damage

Cars parked on the street here collect scrapes, mirror strikes and kerbed wheels. We take paint-depth readings on every panel, distinguish cosmetic resprays from structural repair, and check wheel rims for kerb damage that has bent them or damaged the tyre bead.

Salt and sun on cars that never see a garage

Salt from the coast corrodes brake lines, subframes and sill seams; sun degrades paint clearcoat, dashboard plastics, headlight lenses and rubber seals. We inspect underneath every car and report which corrosion is cosmetic and which is safety-critical.

Cars sold in a hurry at semester end

End-of-semester sales are fast and the seller is often leaving the country. We verify VIN and compliance, check for money owing, confirm the seller is the registered owner, confirm both keys are present, and look for deferred maintenance being handed to the next owner.

Hybrid batteries on high-kilometre cars

Kingsford has an unusually high number of hybrid sedans, many ex-trade. We test the high-voltage battery independently and report measured state of health and cell balance, because the dashboard tells you nothing and a replacement pack can exceed the car's value.

Brakes and tyres on cheap cars

We measure pad and rotor thickness against the manufacturer's minimum, assess brake fluid condition, and read every tyre's date code and tread across the full width, because these are the items most often deferred on a budget car.

Worth arranging before we arrive in Kingsford

  • Ask directly whether the car has ever been a taxi, hire car or rideshare vehicle.
  • Ask whether the seller is the registered owner and whether money is owing.
  • Ask who has serviced the car and whether receipts exist.
  • Ask whether it has been garaged or parked on the street.
  • Ask for the car to be left cold for our arrival.
  • Confirm both keys and the spare wheel are present.
How it works

Booked, inspected, reported.

You don't need to be there and you don't need to move the car. Timing depends on inspector availability in your area and on when the seller can make the vehicle available — we confirm a time with you once we've spoken to them.

  1. 1

    Book online or call us

Send the listing and the address of the car. Tell us if there is anything specific you want checked.

  2. 2

We arrange the time with the seller

We contact the seller or the dealership directly and lock in a time that suits both sides, based on inspector availability in your area. You don't need to be there.

  3. 3

The inspection happens at the car

A qualified mobile inspector attends the vehicle where it is and works through the full checklist, including a road test.

  4. 4

You get the report before you commit

Comprehensive and Elite reports are issued on site. Essential reports are delivered the same day. Every report ends with a plain-English recommendation and a phone call if you want to talk it through.

Straight answers

What a mobile inspection can't tell you.

A pre-purchase inspection in Kingsford removes most of the risk in a used-car purchase. It does not remove all of it, and you should know where the edges are before you book.

  • We do not dismantle the engine, remove the gearbox or pull interior trim, so faults only visible during disassembly can't be ruled out. On Comprehensive and Elite, the engine undertray is removed where fitted, safely accessible and permitted.
  • We work at the vehicle's location, not on a hoist. Underbody checks are done on portable ramps where safe and permitted; seized fasteners, unsafe access or seller refusal are recorded as inspection limitations.
  • A cold-start assessment is only possible if the seller leaves the engine untouched before we arrive. If the car has been warmed up, we record that in the report.
  • The road test runs on public roads at legal speeds, so it can't reproduce every intermittent fault or a fault that only appears under load or after long distances.
  • A PPSR check reports what is registered against the VIN on the day. It cannot show unreported damage or work done off the books.
  • The report describes the vehicle's condition on the day of inspection. It is not a warranty and not a valuation guarantee.
Questions

Kingsford buyers ask us this.
