The whole peninsula is apartment parking: swipe-access basements, car stackers in the older warehouse conversions, and almost no unrestricted kerbside space to work in.
Several of the older Harris Street and Union Street conversions park cars on mechanical stackers. A car on the upper tray cannot be inspected there at all — it has to come down and out. We confirm the parking type at booking, because the difference between a ground bay and a stacker is the difference between a job that runs to time and one that cannot start.
Fluorescent basement lighting hides overspray, texture mismatch and blend lines that daylight shows immediately. Our paint depth gauge still works below ground, but panel alignment and finish quality need to be read outdoors. Where the building allows, we ask for the car on the ramp apron or the street; if it cannot be moved, the report states which visual checks were limited.
Inner-city cars often cover very little distance. That produces a specific fault pattern we test for directly: corroded disc faces and seized handbrake mechanisms, batteries chronically undercharged by short trips, aged tyres with plenty of tread, perished rubber and long-interval oil that has never reached full temperature. Low kilometres are not the same thing as low wear.
Harris Street, the Anzac Bridge approach and Pyrmont Bridge Road are congested and signalised, and there is no easy loop. Where the car is registered and insured and the seller consents, we take the road test toward the Western Distributor or the Anzac Bridge so the drivetrain reaches genuine speed instead of crawling between lights.

A pre-purchase inspection in Pyrmont removes most of the risk in a used-car purchase. It does not remove all of it, and you should know where the edges are before you book.
Yes, with one caveat. Diagnostics, battery and charging, fluids, electrics and the interior are all unaffected below ground. Reading paint finish and panel alignment properly needs daylight, so we ask for the car to be brought up where the building allows, and we state in the report anything the parking prevented us from assessing.
It has to be brought down to ground level before we can inspect it. Please arrange that with the seller before the appointment — a car on an upper tray cannot be safely or usefully assessed where it sits.
Yes. Very low kilometre city cars have their own failure pattern — corroded brake discs, seized handbrake mechanisms, undercharged batteries, aged tyres and rubber, and oil that has done a lot of short cold trips. None of that shows in the odometer, and all of it is measurable.
