Mercedes-Benz C-Class W205 buyer's guide (2014-2021)

A late-model W205 C-Class can be had for the price of a new Corolla. That gap exists for a reason — Mercedes electronics, sensor counts and dealer-only service items eat the savings if you don't go in eyes open.

Engine choices

• C200 / C250 (M274 2.0T petrol) — most common. Smooth, capable, prone to timing chain stretch at 120k+.
• C220d / C250d (OM651 / OM654 diesel) — efficient, refined. OM654 (post-2017) is much better than OM651 for emissions reliability.
• C300 (M264) — late W205, mild-hybrid 2.0T. Good engine, complex system.
• C43 AMG (M276 3.0 bi-turbo V6) — different car entirely. Strong, but service bills are AMG-grade.

Known issues

1. 1.M274 timing chain stretch — listen for rattle on cold start, check codes for camshaft correlation faults. Repair $3-5k.
2. 2.AIRMATIC suspension (optional) — compressors fail at 100-150k. Compressor + reservoir $1.5-2.5k.
3. 3.COMAND/MBUX software — earlier units freeze. Map updates often need dealer.
4. 4.Coolant leaks at front timing cover — check ground under car after test drive.
5. 5.Rear subframe bushes — knock at low speed. $800-1,200 to replace.
6. 6.Adaptive headlights — LED projector failure $1,500+ a side. Confirm all functions on test drive.

Trim and option packs

• C200 Avantgarde — base trim, cloth or basic MB-Tex.
• AMG Line — body kit, sports seats, paddle shifts. The most resaleable spec.
• Premium / Premium Plus packs — panoramic roof, Burmester audio, head-up display. Premium adds $3-5k value used.
• Night Pack — gloss black trim, contrasting alloys. Cosmetic, holds value with younger buyers.

How we work through a W205 at the vehicle

These arrive in the diary in two distinct conditions: carefully maintained cars with a full record, and cars that have passed through several owners quickly with the servicing quietly stretched. The inspection is arranged to establish which one you are standing in front of, in that order.

1. 1.Cold start first, provided the seller has left the engine alone before we arrive.
2. 2.Full module scan, capturing stored and pending codes across the vehicle rather than only what the dash admits to.
3. 3.Body and panel assessment, with paint-thickness readings on every panel where Elite has been booked.
4. 4.Road test on public roads at legal speeds, assessing transmission behaviour, suspension and braking.
5. 5.Underbody and leak check from the ground with lighting, and by lifting the car where that is safe and permitted.
6. 6.Interior, electrical and equipment checks — a large share of the cost risk on this car is electronic rather than mechanical.
7. 7.Service history read against the manufacturer's schedule and, on Comprehensive and Elite, against the PPSR result.

Reading the report before you commit

Comprehensive and Elite reports are issued on site, before the inspector leaves the vehicle, with repair-cost estimates attached to the findings. That timing matters when a seller is pressing for a decision the same afternoon: you can be looking at the evidence while the car is still in front of you.

Common questions

Sedan, wagon or coupe?

Wagon (Estate) holds value best — they're rare and adored by a specific buyer. Coupe depreciates fastest. Sedan is the safe choice.

AMG C43 — is it a smart used buy?

If you can afford the 3-yearly tyres ($3k+), rear brakes ($3-4k a set), and you want a real performance car, yes. Otherwise the AMG-Line C200 looks 90% as good for half the running cost.
