Nissan X-Trail T32 buyer's guide (2014-2022)

The T32 X-Trail outsold the CX-5 for several years and still arrives in our diary weekly. Used prices are now low — $14-25k buys a clean, well-equipped family SUV. But there's one big asterisk: the CVT.

The CVT question

Nissan's JATCO CVT in the 2.5L X-Trail has a history of premature failure — usually flagged by judder, whine, or 'limp home' mode. Pre-2017 examples are most affected. Replacement cost: $5-8k for a refurb, $9-12k new. This is the make-or-break inspection on every X-Trail.

• Insist on a CVT fluid scan — colour should be amber, never burnt-brown.
• Test drive at varying speeds — surging at 60-80 km/h is a transmission warning.
• Check for the Nissan extended CVT warranty — was extended to 84 months/140k for early T32. Confirm service history.

Engine and drivetrain

• 2.5L QR25DE — well-known engine, oil consumption above 150k is common (top up between services).
• 2.0L diesel (rare) — quiet, frugal, but DPF issues on short-trip use.
• AWD — torque-on-demand system, fine for wet roads and gravel, not a serious 4WD.

Trim and body

• ST — base, cloth, often 5-seat only. Common ex-rental.
• ST-L — leather, alloys, the sweet spot.
• Ti — leather, sunroof, around-view monitor.
• TL — diesel + leather.

7-seat option (third row) was available on ST and ST-L from 2017. Third row is genuinely tiny — kids under 10 only.

Common questions

Will the new e-Power affect used T32 prices?

Yes — already happening. As e-Power examples enter the used market from 2025, T32 prices are softening another 5-10%.

How long will a healthy CVT last?

With clean fluid changes every 60k and no extreme driving, 200k+ is realistic. Without, anywhere from 80k onwards.
