NRMA Car Inspection vs Aussie Auto Care: A Sydney Buyer's Honest 2026 Comparison
NRMA has 100 years of brand equity. We have 150-point mobile inspections, live tracking, and OBD-II scans included. Here's the honest side-by-side — price, scope, turnaround, reporting, and where each actually wins.
The NRMA pre-purchase inspection is the default answer most Sydney buyers hear first, and for good reason — 100 years of brand recognition, roadside heritage, and a network that reaches almost every corner of NSW. We respect the operation. But when you compare like for like — same car, same suburb, same day — the two services are not identical products. This is the honest breakdown.
Everything below is drawn from NRMA's own published pricing and inspection scope as of 2026 and our internal service specifications. Where a figure could not be verified from a primary source, we say so.
Price at a glance
NRMA's pre-purchase inspection pricing varies by region, package and member/non-member status, and changes without notice. Rather than quoting a figure that may be out of date by the time you read this, we suggest checking NRMA's own site for the current price on the day you book. What we can quote with certainty is our own pricing:
| Aussie Auto Care tier | Price | Scope headline |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | $199 | 100+ point mobile inspection |
| Comprehensive | $329 | 150+ points, OBD-II diagnostic scan included |
| Elite | $449 | 200+ points, extended road test, negotiation-ready report |
| EV battery State-of-Health add-on | $149 | Available on any tier for EVs |
Scope — what's actually checked
"150-point inspection" is meaningless unless you know which 150 points. Ask any provider — us, NRMA, or anyone else — for their published scope before booking.
What to expect from a proper mobile PPI (any reputable provider)
- Visual mechanical inspection covering engine, transmission, brakes, suspension and steering.
- Body and paint inspection under natural light.
- Road test on mixed roads where safe and legal.
- Written report delivered same day.
- OBD-II diagnostic scan on any vehicle built after 2001 (confirm this is included, not an optional extra).
Aussie Auto Care Comprehensive ($329) — what's always included
- 150+ mechanical, structural and electrical checkpoints.
- OBD-II ECU scan on every inspection (live + stored fault codes, freeze-frame data, total runtime hours).
- Paint depth gauge readings on every panel — the single most reliable way to catch undisclosed accident repair.
- Underbody inspection with photos, not just a visual glance.
- Live GPS tracking so you know when the inspector arrives.
- PPSR search included — no separate charge.
- Digital report with photos and short videos on each defect, delivered the same day.
Elite ($449) adds
- Extended road test on both city and freeway cycles.
- Compression / leak-down check where symptoms warrant.
- Negotiation report — dollar figures against every defect so you can walk into the seller with numbers.
- Priority same-day booking, 7 days a week.
- Two follow-up calls with the lead inspector to talk through the findings.
Mobile vs workshop
NRMA offers both. Their mobile inspection is a subset of their workshop inspection — a hoist-based check is deeper than what any inspector can do in a driveway, whichever company you use.
Aussie Auto Care is fully mobile across greater Sydney. We come to the seller's driveway, dealer forecourt or auction yard. We use portable ramps and creepers so an inspector can view the underbody thoroughly, but we cannot replicate a full hoist inspection. On any car older than 12 years or with visible suspension concerns, we will say so in the report and recommend a workshop follow-up.
Turnaround and availability
NRMA is a national operation with strong regional coverage but lead times for a mobile inspection in Sydney can stretch to several business days at peak. Aussie Auto Care operates same-day or next-day across the Sydney metro area, seven days a week, with GPS tracking so you know when the inspector is arriving. Reports are delivered as a shareable digital link with photos and short videos rather than a static PDF.
Reporting quality
The report is the deliverable. If you can't understand it, negotiate off it, or hand it to a mechanic later, none of the checkpoints matter. Any reputable PPI should include categorised findings (pass / advisory / fail), photos of every defect, and clear notes on the road test. Aussie Auto Care reports add short videos where movement or noise matters, verbatim OBD-II scan output, and — on Elite — repair cost estimates against each defect so you have specific numbers to negotiate with.
Where NRMA genuinely wins
- Regional coverage well outside Sydney metro — Central Coast, Hunter, Illawarra and beyond.
- Workshop-based inspections with a hoist for older or complex vehicles.
- Brand comfort for members who've held NRMA cover for decades.
- Bundled discounts if you already pay membership.
Where we're the better fit
- Same-day mobile bookings across Sydney metro, including weekends.
- OBD-II scan and paint gauge included on every Comprehensive and above — not optional add-ons.
- EV pre-purchase inspections with a battery State-of-Health add-on.
- Video-rich reports you can share by link and reference during negotiation.
- Negotiation-ready dollar estimates on Elite — most buyers save more than the inspection cost on the seller conversation alone.
A practical decision framework
- 1.Buying an EV, hybrid or a car with obvious electrical complexity → us. Battery add-on and OBD-II scan matter.
- 2.Buying a 15+ year-old car with rusty underbody → NRMA workshop inspection on a hoist.
- 3.Regional NSW (Newcastle, Wollongong, further) → NRMA, we don't cover you.
- 4.Sydney metro, weekend, private seller, need it done fast → us.
- 5.Already NRMA member and time is not urgent → NRMA closes the price gap on Comprehensive.
Common questions
Is NRMA better because they're bigger?
Bigger does not mean better on any individual inspection. Both services are as strong as the specific inspector who turns up. Ask either company how long the assigned inspector has been in trade before booking.
Does either company inspect at auction?
Yes — both offer inspections at Manheim, Pickles and Grays yards. Pre-book two business days ahead as viewing windows are tight.
Will an NRMA report be accepted by my dealer for negotiation?
Yes. Dealers accept any legitimate independent PPI report. What matters is the substance — clear defects with photos and figures — not the letterhead.
Do you offer any guarantee on your report?
We stand behind every report. If you have questions about our current guarantee terms, contact us before booking and we'll walk you through what's covered.
