The two halves of Collaroy present different problems: the beachfront is exposed, flat and short of parking, while the plateau is steep, quiet and easy to work on but harder to reach a test road from.

We concentrate on where that actually does damage: door and boot drain channels, seam sealer edges, brake and fuel line runs, alloy corrosion at the wheel face and hub interface, and the rear hatch or tailgate lip. The streets climbing off Pittwater Road toward Collaroy Plateau are sustained gradients. Going up loads the engine, transmission and cooling system; coming down loads the brakes continuously rather than in short applications. That combination exposes a slipping automatic, a tired clutch, brake shudder or a weak handbrake far better than a flat run, so we build it into the road test where the seller consents.
Parking near the beach is metered, time-limited and full through the middle of the day. An inspection is not quick, so we plan the visit around a workable spot: room to open doors, jack access clear of the gutter, and a legal place for the inspector's vehicle. If the seller has a driveway or a garage, using it saves real time.
Beach-side cars carry wet gear and sand, and both end up in the same places: boot floor and spare well, seat rails, window channels, door drain slots and under the carpet at the sills. We lift the boot liner and check the carpet edges rather than judging a cabin by how it looks and smells at first glance.

A pre-purchase inspection in Collaroy removes most of the risk in a used-car purchase. It does not remove all of it, and you should know where the edges are before you book.
