Pre-purchase car inspection in Frenchs Forest.

Frenchs Forest is the inland heart of the Northern Beaches, and its cars are working family vehicles rather than beach toys. Large SUVs and dual-cabs that tow boats to the ramps at Narrabeen and Middle Harbour, seven-seaters doing the school runs along Warringah Road, and a growing number of hospital shift-worker commuters since the new hospital opened. The suburb backs onto bushland, the blocks are steep, and the driveways are steeper. A car that has spent five years here has towed, climbed, scraped and idled in Warringah Road traffic in ways a flat-suburb car never has, and its listing will not mention any of it. We come to the car, complete a structured inspection, run a professional multi-module diagnostic scan, road test it including gradient and load, and hand you a written, photographed report on the spot with a plain verdict and costed repairs. We do not sell cars and the seller pays us nothing.

Local conditions

Towing, gradients and bushland

Three things shape the cars here. Boat and trailer towing, which is the hardest work an automatic transmission and cooling system ever do. Steep driveways and hills, which wear brakes, clutches and underbodies. And a bush edge with wildlife on the road and leaf litter in every drain, which produces animal-strike repairs and water ingress that owners rarely mention.

Boat-towing transmissions and cooling systems

A tow bar with a polished ball and a used trailer plug tells us to look much harder. We check transmission fluid condition and colour, feel for flare and delay, scan for stored temperature and slip faults, inspect any retrofitted transmission cooler, pressure-test the cooling system and verify both fan stages, because a marginal cooling system on a tow vehicle is the fault that ends an engine.

Salt water on the tow vehicle from the boat ramp

Tow vehicles get reversed into salt water at the ramp, and the rear of the car gets it worst. We inspect the rear chassis rails, tow bar mounting points, rear suspension, exhaust, spare wheel carrier and rear brake lines for the corrosion that ramp dunking produces, and we distinguish cosmetic surface rust from structural attack.

Rear suspension and driveline under permanent load

Tow vehicles sit low at the rear, wear their rear bushes and shocks early, and load their driveline joints and wheel bearings. We check ride height, bush condition, shock performance, CV and tailshaft joints, and the tow bar and chassis mounting points for stress cracking.

Steep driveway damage and hill wear

We inspect sumps, transmission pans, undertrays and exhausts for scrape and impact damage, test park brake holding on a real gradient, measure pad and rotor thickness against the manufacturer's minimum, and assess clutch or torque-converter behaviour under load on a hill.

Animal strike and front-end repair

Wildlife on Forest Way and Wakehurst Parkway produces a steady stream of front-end repairs. We take paint-depth readings on every panel, check headlight and glass date stamps for mismatches, inspect radiator and condenser fins and supports, and look behind the bumper for crush damage and cheap repair.

Leaf litter, drains and water ingress

Cars parked under trees fill their cowl, sunroof and door drains. We check drains, lift carpets, test the spare wheel well and boot corners, and look for corroded seat-rail fasteners and under-dash connectors.

Shift-worker kilometres on family cars

Hospital commuting at odd hours puts fast, steady kilometres on cars that were bought for school runs. We road test at highway speed and check every bearing, joint and bush for the wear that only shows above ninety kilometres an hour.

Worth arranging before we arrive in Frenchs Forest

  • Ask whether the car has towed, what it towed and how often.
  • Ask whether it has ever been reversed into salt water at a boat ramp.
  • Ask whether it has ever hit an animal or had front-end repair.
  • Ask when the transmission fluid and brake fluid were last changed.
  • Ask for the car to be left cold for our arrival.
  • Ask whether it has been parked under trees and whether the interior has ever been damp.
How it works

Booked, inspected, reported.

You don't need to be there and you don't need to move the car. Timing depends on inspector availability in your area and on when the seller can make the vehicle available — we confirm a time with you once we've spoken to them.

  1. 1

    Book online or call us

Send the listing and the address of the car. Tell us if there is anything specific you want checked.

  2. 2

We arrange the time with the seller

We contact the seller or the dealership directly and lock in a time that suits both sides, based on inspector availability in your area. You don't need to be there.

  3. 3

The inspection happens at the car

A qualified mobile inspector attends the vehicle where it is and works through the full checklist, including a road test.

  4. 4

You get the report before you commit

Comprehensive and Elite reports are issued on site. Essential reports are delivered the same day. Every report ends with a plain-English recommendation and a phone call if you want to talk it through.

Straight answers

What a mobile inspection can't tell you.

A pre-purchase inspection in Frenchs Forest removes most of the risk in a used-car purchase. It does not remove all of it, and you should know where the edges are before you book.

  • We do not dismantle the engine, remove the gearbox or pull interior trim, so faults only visible during disassembly can't be ruled out. On Comprehensive and Elite, the engine undertray is removed where fitted, safely accessible and permitted.
  • We work at the vehicle's location, not on a hoist. Underbody checks are done on portable ramps where safe and permitted; seized fasteners, unsafe access or seller refusal are recorded as inspection limitations.
  • A cold-start assessment is only possible if the seller leaves the engine untouched before we arrive. If the car has been warmed up, we record that in the report.
  • The road test runs on public roads at legal speeds, so it can't reproduce every intermittent fault or a fault that only appears under load or after long distances.
  • A PPSR check reports what is registered against the VIN on the day. It cannot show unreported damage or work done off the books.
  • The report describes the vehicle's condition on the day of inspection. It is not a warranty and not a valuation guarantee.
