Pre-purchase car inspection in Merewether.

Merewether cars live a comfortable life and a corrosive one at the same time. They sit a few hundred metres from the surf, they do short trips to The Junction and back, they climb steep streets from cold every morning, and many of them spend more time parked than driven. That combination produces a very particular kind of used car: low kilometres, immaculate paint, full leather, and underneath it all a set of age-related faults that a kilometre reading will never warn you about. The most common mistake we see buyers make here is treating a low odometer as proof of condition. We come to the car wherever it is, complete a structured inspection, scan every module, road test on genuine Merewether gradients and hand you a written, photographed report on the spot. We are paid by you rather than the seller, and the report says exactly what we found.

Why low kilometres can be the trap here

Rubber and plastic age on a calendar, not on a trip meter. Coolant hoses, vacuum lines, engine mounts, suspension bushes, CV boots, door seals and timing belts all degrade with time and heat cycles, and a car serviced by kilometres rather than by date can be years overdue on every one of them. Short trips add their own problems, and the salt does the rest.

Salt corrosion on the parts nobody photographs

We go underneath every car. Brake and fuel lines, suspension arms and mounting points, subframe bolts, exhaust hangers, sill seams, boot floor and spare wheel well, rear spring perches and the underside of the doors and tailgate. A corroded brake line is a safety defect and a genuine reason to walk away. A corroded exhaust hanger is a twenty-dollar problem. Our report separates the two rather than lump all rust together.

Carbon build-up on short-trip engines

There is a high proportion of European vehicles around here and a lot of them do short cold-start runs. Direct-injected petrol engines coat their intake valves with carbon under exactly those conditions, producing rough cold idle, misfires and hesitation, and eventually a substantial cleaning bill. We look for the misfire counts and fuel-trim patterns in the live data rather than waiting for a warning light.

Services overdue by years rather than kilometres

We check the service history against both the odometer and the calendar and flag anything due on dates. On an interference engine, a timing belt overdue by time is the single largest risk on the car and the cheapest one to eliminate before you buy.

Convertible and sunroof water ingress

Soft tops, sunroofs and panoramic roofs all rely on drain channels that block with salt, sand and leaf litter. We check the drains, lift carpets, test the spare wheel well and boot corners for damp, and look for the musty smell and corroded floor fasteners that indicate a long-standing leak. Water also destroys body control modules and seat electronics, which are expensive.

Sand and salt inside the car

Beach cars carry sand into seat rails, the boot and the spare well, and salt into the ventilation system. We check seat runners for binding and corrosion, inspect the cabin filter and evaporator housing, and measure air conditioning output, because a salty evaporator is both unpleasant and costly.

Brakes, batteries and tyres killed by inactivity

A car that sits develops flat-spotted and perished tyres regardless of tread depth, surface-rusted and pitted rotors, seized caliper slides and handbrake cables, and a battery that has been deep-cycled repeatedly. We read tyre date codes as well as tread, because a six-year-old tyre with 7 mm of tread is still a tyre that needs replacing.

Steep-street clutch and brake wear

The climbs off the beach and up toward The Junction are hard on clutches, torque converters, handbrakes and rotors. We road test on real gradients, assess clutch bite and slip under load, and test park brake holding performance on a hill rather than on the flat.

Worth arranging before we arrive in Merewether

  • Ask for the service history and check the dates, not only the kilometres.
  • Ask when the timing belt was last replaced, if the engine uses one.
  • Ask whether the car has been garaged or parked on the street.
  • Ask whether the sunroof or convertible roof has ever leaked.
  • Ask for the car to be left cold so we can assess a genuine cold start.
  • Check that the tyres are all the same brand and note how old they look.
How it works

Booked, inspected, reported.

You don't need to be there and you don't need to move the car. Timing depends on inspector availability in your area and on when the seller can make the vehicle available — we confirm a time with you once we've spoken to them.

  1. 1

    Book online or call us

Send the listing and the address of the car. Tell us if there is anything specific you want checked.

  2. 2

We arrange the time with the seller

We contact the seller or the dealership directly and lock in a time that suits both sides, based on inspector availability in your area. You don't need to be there.

  3. 3

The inspection happens at the car

A qualified mobile inspector attends the vehicle where it is and works through the full checklist, including a road test.

  4. 4

You get the report before you commit

Comprehensive and Elite reports are issued on site. Essential reports are delivered the same day. Every report ends with a plain-English recommendation and a phone call if you want to talk it through.

Straight answers

What a mobile inspection can't tell you.

A pre-purchase inspection in Merewether removes most of the risk in a used-car purchase. It does not remove all of it, and you should know where the edges are before you book.

  • We do not dismantle the engine, remove the gearbox or pull interior trim, so faults only visible during disassembly can't be ruled out. On Comprehensive and Elite, the engine undertray is removed where fitted, safely accessible and permitted.
  • We work at the vehicle's location, not on a hoist. Underbody checks are done on portable ramps where safe and permitted; seized fasteners, unsafe access or seller refusal are recorded as inspection limitations.
  • A cold-start assessment is only possible if the seller leaves the engine untouched before we arrive. If the car has been warmed up, we record that in the report.
  • The road test runs on public roads at legal speeds, so it can't reproduce every intermittent fault or a fault that only appears under load or after long distances.
  • A PPSR check reports what is registered against the VIN on the day. It cannot show unreported damage or work done off the books.
  • The report describes the vehicle's condition on the day of inspection. It is not a warranty and not a valuation guarantee.
Questions

Merewether buyers ask us this.

Especially then. Low-kilometre coastal cars are where we find overdue timing belts, perished rubber, corroded brake lines and roof leaks. Kilometres measure use, not condition.
