Pre-purchase car inspection in Rhodes.

Rhodes is a peninsula of apartment towers, and the used cars sold here are unlike the cars sold anywhere else in Sydney. They live in basement car parks. They do short trips. Many of them barely move at all, because their owners take the train or the ferry to work five days a week. A steady stream of them are also sold in a hurry by people leaving the country or moving interstate, which is both an opportunity for a buyer and a reason to look carefully. We come to the car, work through a structured inspection of every major system, run a professional multi-module diagnostic scan, road test it properly including highway speed, and hand you a written, photographed report on the spot with a clear verdict and costed repairs. We do not sell cars and the seller pays us nothing.

The apartment-car problem

The classic listing here reads beautifully: six years old, thirty-eight thousand kilometres, one owner, always garaged, full service history. Sometimes that is exactly what it is. Often it is a car that has been driven four kilometres at a time for six years and has never once reached proper operating temperature. Short-trip, low-use cars develop a distinctive set of faults that have nothing at all to do with the odometer.

Basement car park damage

Tight ramps, concrete pillars, narrow bays and low clearance produce a very specific damage pattern: scraped bumper corners, kerbed alloys, scuffed sills, front lip and undertray damage from ramp transitions, and mirror strikes. We take paint-depth readings on every panel, photograph every one, and distinguish a resprayed bumper from a repaired structural corner, because one is cosmetic and one is not.

Short-trip engine damage

An engine that never fully warms up accumulates moisture and fuel in the oil, and a direct-injected petrol engine coats its intake valves with carbon under exactly these conditions. We inspect oil condition, look for the misfire counts and fuel-trim patterns in live data, and on any diesel we check particulate filter soot load and regeneration history, because a diesel in a city basement is close to the worst possible use case.

Rideshare and delivery histories

This corridor has a high concentration of rideshare and delivery vehicles, which accumulate enormous city kilometres with heavy idling. We look for the indicators: kilometres against age and service history, driver's seat bolster and pedal wear, dash and windscreen phone-mount marks, and rear seat and door-card wear inconsistent with a private car.

Cars sold in a hurry before departure

A relocation sale is often genuine and often good value, but the seller has no interest in the car's future and every interest in a fast, clean transaction. We check the service history properly, verify VIN and compliance data against the vehicle, confirm both keys are present, look for deferred maintenance left for the next owner, and check whether money is owing on the car.

Services overdue by time rather than kilometres

We check service intervals against both the odometer and the calendar and flag anything overdue on dates: engine oil, brake fluid, coolant, transmission fluid and, critically, timing belts on the engines that use them. On an interference engine this check alone can be worth the value of the car.

Brakes, batteries and tyres degraded by sitting

Damp basements produce surface-rusted rotors, seized caliper slides and binding handbrake cables. Short trips never replace the charge used to start the car, so batteries are chronically undercharged. And tyres age rather than wear, so we read every date code, including the spare, and look for the flat-spotting that comes from standing.

Water ingress and stale climate systems

Blocked sunroof drains and perished door seals in a damp basement produce musty interiors, corroded seat-rail fasteners and failed body control modules. We lift carpets, check the spare wheel well and boot corners, inspect the sunroof drains, measure air conditioning vent output and check the cabin filter.

Worth arranging before we arrive in Rhodes

  • Ask how the car has actually been used and how often it is driven.
  • Ask when the brake fluid, coolant and timing belt were last attended to.
  • Ask whether the car has ever been used for rideshare or deliveries.
  • Ask whether there is money owing on it.
  • Confirm both keys are present and that the spare or repair kit is in the car.
  • Ask the seller or building manager to arrange basement access for us in advance.
How it works

Booked, inspected, reported.

You don't need to be there and you don't need to move the car. Timing depends on inspector availability in your area and on when the seller can make the vehicle available — we confirm a time with you once we've spoken to them.

  1. 1

    Book online or call us

Send the listing and the address of the car. Tell us if there is anything specific you want checked.

  2. 2

We arrange the time with the seller

We contact the seller or the dealership directly and lock in a time that suits both sides, based on inspector availability in your area. You don't need to be there.

  3. 3

The inspection happens at the car

A qualified mobile inspector attends the vehicle where it is and works through the full checklist, including a road test.

  4. 4

You get the report before you commit

Comprehensive and Elite reports are issued on site. Essential reports are delivered the same day. Every report ends with a plain-English recommendation and a phone call if you want to talk it through.

Straight answers

What a mobile inspection can't tell you.

A pre-purchase inspection in Rhodes removes most of the risk in a used-car purchase. It does not remove all of it, and you should know where the edges are before you book.

  • We do not dismantle the engine, remove the gearbox or pull interior trim, so faults only visible during disassembly can't be ruled out. On Comprehensive and Elite, the engine undertray is removed where fitted, safely accessible and permitted.
  • We work at the vehicle's location, not on a hoist. Underbody checks are done on portable ramps where safe and permitted; seized fasteners, unsafe access or seller refusal are recorded as inspection limitations.
  • A cold-start assessment is only possible if the seller leaves the engine untouched before we arrive. If the car has been warmed up, we record that in the report.
  • The road test runs on public roads at legal speeds, so it can't reproduce every intermittent fault or a fault that only appears under load or after long distances.
  • A PPSR check reports what is registered against the VIN on the day. It cannot show unreported damage or work done off the books.
  • The report describes the vehicle's condition on the day of inspection. It is not a warranty and not a valuation guarantee.
Questions

Rhodes buyers ask us this.

Yes, routinely. We need the seller or building management to arrange access and enough space to work safely around the car. If the basement is too tight, we ask for the car to be brought up to visitor parking or street level.
