The slopes between Victoria Road and the river are steep enough to be a genuine test: hill-start behaviour, handbrake holding, clutch take-up or transmission creep, and brake performance on a descent. We use a graded street on purpose rather than treating the road test as a flat lap.
The same slopes make a poor place to park for the static inspection. On a cambered hill, fluid drips run away from where they started, tyre wear reads unevenly and door alignment can be misleading. We do the static work on the flattest available surface and save the gradient for the drive.
With Victoria Road and access to the M2 close by, the road test can include sustained higher-speed running. Wheel balance, driveline vibration, alignment pull and torque-converter lock-up need speed and time to show themselves, and none of them appear in a suburban loop.
