Pre-purchase car inspection on the North Shore.
A qualified mobile mechanic comes to the car — a Chatswood or Artarmon dealership, a driveway in Killara or Wahroonga, a listing out at Ryde, Eastwood or Macquarie Park. 200+ point inspection, PPSR check, photo report with a clear verdict. From $199.

Why a pre-purchase inspection matters on the North Shore.
The North Shore has the highest concentration of prestige and near-new used cars in Sydney, and the least honest set of visual cues. Cars here are garage-kept, professionally detailed and beautifully presented. They are also, on average, the most electronically complex vehicles on the market — and complexity is where the expensive faults hide.
A twelve-year-old Corolla tells you what is wrong with it. A five-year-old German SUV does not: air-suspension compressor wear, mechatronic unit faults in a dual-clutch gearbox, an ADAS camera left uncalibrated after a windscreen replacement, or a battery-management fault stored in a module you cannot reach with a $40 code reader. Every one of those is a four-figure repair and none of them light up the dash while the car sits idling in a driveway at Pymble.
That is the whole point of an independent inspection here: not to tell you the paint looks good — you can see that — but to read what the car's own computers already know, measure what is worn, and put a number on it before you make an offer.

What buying a used car on the North Shore actually looks like in 2026.
The vehicle mix splits fairly cleanly. From Mosman through Lindfield to Wahroonga and St Ives it is prestige European and large luxury SUVs — BMW X-series, Mercedes GLC and GLE, Audi Q5, Range Rover, Volvo XC60, Lexus RX — with low kilometres and full dealer books. Through Ryde, Eastwood, Macquarie Park and Epping it is mainstream family metal and one of Sydney's densest hybrid and EV pools, driven by the business park and university corridors.
Three risks dominate. First, deferred maintenance on lease and novated returns handed back at end of term — brakes, tyres and a major service all due at once. Second, undisclosed repair on prestige cars, where the work is skilled enough that only a paint-depth gauge and a panel-gap check will find it. Third, hybrid and EV battery degradation, which is completely invisible on a test drive and can be worth thousands off the price.
There is also a timing issue specific to this market: the good cars move privately and fast, often to the first buyer who can commit. That pressure is real, but a 90-minute inspection has never actually cost anyone a good car — sellers with nothing to hide accommodate it.
60+ checkpoints, every inspection.
The documented checklist a workshop would run before a major service or warranty handover — done on site, in front of the car you're about to buy.

The faults we keep finding around the North Shore.
Real issues flagged on inspections in this region — and what they typically cost to put right.
Air suspension and adaptive damper wear
Range Rover, Q7, X5, GLE, Touareg and Cayenne. Compressor fatigue, perished air-strut bladders and leaking valve blocks. The car often self-levels fine while parked and only sags overnight or drops a corner under load. A single strut is $1,800–$3,500; a full system with the compressor runs well past $6,000.
Dual-clutch and mechatronic faults
DSG, S tronic, PDK and BMW DCT gearboxes. Shudder from standstill, delayed engagement and stored adaptation faults that never trigger a dash light. We read the transmission module directly and road-test under load and overrun. A mechatronic unit is $3,500–$7,000.
Deferred maintenance on lease and novated returns
Brake pads and rotors at or below minimum thickness, tyres on the wear indicators, brake fluid past its service interval and a major service due immediately. We measure rather than eyeball, so the $2,000–$5,000 of first-month cost lands in your offer instead of your credit card.
Uncalibrated ADAS after glass or bumper work
Lane keeping, adaptive cruise, autonomous braking and blind-spot systems rely on cameras and radar that must be recalibrated after a windscreen, grille or bumper replacement. Skipping it is common and invisible. We scan for calibration and camera faults across all modules on Comprehensive and Elite.
Timing chain wear on European engines
Cold-start rattle on N20, N47 and early EA888 engines, plus chain-guide wear on some Mercedes fours. Because we start the car cold — we ask for it to be untouched before we arrive — we hear what a warm car hides. Chain replacement is $2,500–$5,500 depending on engine access.
Hybrid and EV battery degradation
Heavy hybrid and EV density through Macquarie Park, Chatswood, Lindfield and Epping. A Tesla, RAV4 hybrid or plug-in Volvo can present perfectly and still have lost meaningful usable capacity. Our $199 add-on measures state of health and issues a certificate — the strongest negotiating document in the used-EV market.
Undisclosed repair on immaculate-looking cars
A skilled prestige repair is invisible to the eye and obvious to a gauge. We measure paint depth on every panel and check panel gaps, bolt marks and inner-guard welds. Undisclosed structural repair does not just cost money to fix — it permanently reduces what you can resell the car for.
Water ingress from sunroofs and panoramic glass
Panoramic roofs are near-universal on North Shore SUVs and their drains block with leaf litter from the very trees that make these suburbs desirable. Damp headlining, wet footwell underlay and corroded body-control modules follow. We check drains, seals and carpet moisture on every inspection.

Buying from a dealer vs a private seller.
Dealer
- A statutory warranty applies to most vehicles under 10 years / 160,000 km — limited in time and scope. Read it before you sign.
- A reputable yard will welcome an independent mechanic on site. Hesitation is a red flag.
- Dealer-prep fees, paint and interior protection, and extended warranties are all negotiable.
Private seller
- Strictly sold as-is. No statutory warranty, no cooling-off, no consumer-protection backstop.
- A PPSR check is essential — outstanding finance survives the sale and the lender can repossess the car from you.
- Prices sit below dealer money, so an independent inspection is usually the difference between a bargain and a liability.
Inspection questions answered.
Essential is $199, Comprehensive $329 and Elite $449. On the North Shore we recommend Elite more often than anywhere else in Sydney, simply because the vehicle mix skews to European prestige and near-new SUVs where the electronics and ADAS systems are worth the deeper diagnostic pass. Comprehensive is the right call for mainstream family cars from Ryde, Eastwood or Hornsby. The $199 EV / Hybrid Battery Health add-on works with any tier and there is no travel surcharge.
