The climbs off the beachfront are short and steep. Where the car is registered and insured and the seller agrees, we use them deliberately: clutch take-up and slip under load, hill-hold behaviour, whether the park brake actually holds rather than relying on a transmission pawl, and how an automatic handles a low-speed climb.
Some vehicles here are used seasonally rather than daily. Standing time produces corroded disc faces, flat-spotted and date-expired tyres, undercharged batteries, perished rubber and stale fuel behaviour. We measure the discs, read tyre date codes, load-test the battery and watch how the engine runs from cold rather than treating low kilometres as a virtue.
Terrigal Drive and the town streets are too slow to load a driveline. Where a road test is possible we head out toward the Central Coast Highway so the car reaches sustained speed, because wheel balance, vibration, steering pull and torque-converter behaviour only appear there.
