Pre-purchase car inspection in Umina Beach.

Umina Beach and the peninsula around it are one of the last strongholds of the Australian-built car. Falcons, Commodores, Territories and their wagons and utes are still everywhere here, kept going by owners who know them and sold on to buyers who want a big, simple, cheap car for the beach and the highway. They are good cars to buy and easy cars to buy badly, because every one of them has a well-known weak point that the seller either does not know about or does not mention. Add sandy soil, salt air, and a peninsula full of cars that came up from Sydney with a relocation, and the inspection has a lot to look at. We come to the car, complete a structured inspection, run a professional multi-module diagnostic scan, road test it properly and hand you a written, photographed report on the spot with a plain verdict and costed repairs. We do not sell cars and the seller pays us nothing.

Local conditions

The last of the Australian-built cars, and what breaks on them

Every locally built model of the last twenty years has a signature fault, and on the peninsula we see all of them. Transmission behaviour on the later Falcons, timing chains on the alloy V6 Commodores, ball joints and differential bushes on the Territory, cooling systems on all of them in coastal heat. A buyer who knows which car they are looking at knows what to check, and that is what our inspectors bring.

Known weak points on Australian-built models

We check the automatic transmission on later Falcons for the flare, delay and harsh shifting that indicates trouble; listen for timing chain rattle on a cold start on the alloy V6 Commodores and scan for cam correlation faults; check Territory front ball joints and rear differential bushes for play; and inspect the cooling system on every one of them, because these engines are hard on radiators and thermostats in coastal heat.

Sand and salt on a peninsula car

The peninsula is sand from one side to the other. We check seat rails and runners for sand binding and corrosion, inspect the underbody for salt attack on brake lines, subframes, sill seams and boot floors, check the cabin filter and evaporator housing, and look at the spare wheel well and boot channels for sand and damp.

LPG conversions on big sixes

A great many of these cars were converted to LPG. We check the tank's stamped date and compliance, lines and fittings, whether the car actually starts and runs properly on both fuels, and whether a gas system has simply been disconnected and left in place.

Cars that came up from Sydney with a move

A large share of the peninsula's cars arrived with a relocation and have service history spread across Sydney workshops. We verify VIN and compliance, reconcile the odometer against the records, check for money owing and confirm who the registered owner is.

Tow bars, boats and the ramp

Brisbane Water and the ocean are minutes away and these cars tow. A used tow ball sends us to the transmission fluid, cooling system, rear suspension and driveline, and to the rear underbody for boat-ramp salt corrosion on the chassis rails, tow bar mounts and rear brake lines.

Sun damage and perished rubber

Coastal ultraviolet destroys clearcoat, dashboard plastics, headlight lenses and rubber seals. We assess all of them, because a cracked dash and hazed headlights on an older car are cosmetic until the headlights fail an inspection.

Brakes, tyres and suspension on a heavy old car

Big Australian sedans and wagons are heavy and hard on their brakes and suspension. We measure pad and rotor thickness against the manufacturer's minimum, read every tyre's date code and tread across the full width, and check bushes, ball joints, shocks and bearings for the wear that a heavy car on rough peninsula roads produces.

Worth arranging before we arrive in Umina Beach

  • Ask whether the car runs on LPG and whether the gas system is still connected.
  • Ask whether the transmission or timing chain has ever been repaired or replaced.
  • Ask whether the car has towed and been on a boat ramp.
  • Ask where the car has been serviced and whether the records are complete.
  • Ask for the car to be left cold overnight for our arrival.
  • Confirm both keys and the spare wheel are present.
How it works

Booked, inspected, reported.

You don't need to be there and you don't need to move the car. Timing depends on inspector availability in your area and on when the seller can make the vehicle available — we confirm a time with you once we've spoken to them.

  1. 1

    Book online or call us

Send the listing and the address of the car. Tell us if there is anything specific you want checked.

  2. 2

We arrange the time with the seller

We contact the seller or the dealership directly and lock in a time that suits both sides, based on inspector availability in your area. You don't need to be there.

  3. 3

The inspection happens at the car

A qualified mobile inspector attends the vehicle where it is and works through the full checklist, including a road test.

  4. 4

You get the report before you commit

Comprehensive and Elite reports are issued on site. Essential reports are delivered the same day. Every report ends with a plain-English recommendation and a phone call if you want to talk it through.

Straight answers

What a mobile inspection can't tell you.

A pre-purchase inspection in Umina Beach removes most of the risk in a used-car purchase. It does not remove all of it, and you should know where the edges are before you book.

  • We do not dismantle the engine, remove the gearbox or pull interior trim, so faults only visible during disassembly can't be ruled out. On Comprehensive and Elite, the engine undertray is removed where fitted, safely accessible and permitted.
  • We work at the vehicle's location, not on a hoist. Underbody checks are done on portable ramps where safe and permitted; seized fasteners, unsafe access or seller refusal are recorded as inspection limitations.
  • A cold-start assessment is only possible if the seller leaves the engine untouched before we arrive. If the car has been warmed up, we record that in the report.
  • The road test runs on public roads at legal speeds, so it can't reproduce every intermittent fault or a fault that only appears under load or after long distances.
  • A PPSR check reports what is registered against the VIN on the day. It cannot show unreported damage or work done off the books.
  • The report describes the vehicle's condition on the day of inspection. It is not a warranty and not a valuation guarantee.
