Brisbane & QLD buyer's guide: inspecting and registering a Sydney car in Queensland
Brisbane and SE QLD buyers regularly find prestige, EV and low-km inventory in Sydney that just isn't available up north. Here's the QLD workflow: Sydney pre-purchase inspection, transport up the M1, Queensland Safety Certificate and TMR registration.
Sydney-to-Brisbane is the second-most-common interstate corridor we inspect for. Distance is 920 km up the M1/Pacific, transport is well-served by weekly runs, and the price differential on certain categories — prestige German, EV, and specific 4WD trims — regularly justifies the exercise for Brisbane and SE QLD buyers.
What QLD buyers find in Sydney
- EVs — Sydney's EV market is roughly 2x Brisbane's on any given day, especially for Tesla Model 3/Y, Polestar, BYD Atto 3 and Kia EV6.
- Prestige German — same oversupply that helps Melbourne buyers helps Brisbane buyers.
- Ex-corporate SUVs — most national fleet lessors dispose through Sydney auctions.
- Lower rust risk — Sydney's coastal exposure is comparable to Brisbane's, so no unusual coastal-corrosion pattern to worry about (unlike Perth or Adelaide cars with 40°C+ dry summers).
Sydney → Brisbane transport in 2026
| Type | Price | Transit time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open trailer | $500 – $700 | 3 – 5 days | Daily-drive under $60k |
| Enclosed trailer | $900 – $1,200 | 3 – 5 days | Prestige, over $80k, freshly painted |
| Drive yourself | ~$200 fuel + 1 overnight (10 hrs one way) | 1 – 2 days | Enthusiasts or same-day pickup |
Reputable transporters on this corridor: PrixCar, CEVA, JCL, Northline. Volume is strong so pricing is competitive; expect the low end of the range for daily-driver spec.
Queensland Safety Certificate — the mandatory step
To register a car in Queensland (including a car transferred from NSW) you need a Queensland Safety Certificate (SC), sometimes called a roadworthy. This is a QLD-specific compliance check — your Sydney pre-purchase inspection does not replace it.
- Cost: $90 – $150 at any Approved Inspection Station (AIS).
- Valid for 2 months or 2,000 km from date of issue (whichever comes first) for private-to-private transfers.
- Focuses on QLD roadworthiness rules — tyres, brakes, steering, seat belts, lights, wipers, windscreen, exhaust, body structure, tinting (35% VLT front side).
- Common failure items on Sydney cars: dark aftermarket tint (QLD allows 35% VLT front sides — same as VIC), worn tyres, LED bulb conversions.
QLD stamp duty and registration costs
- Stamp duty on passenger vehicles: 3% (up to 4-cylinder) rising to 5% (7-cylinder or more, including most V8s and larger V6s), based on dutiable value.
- Rego (12 months): ~$820 for a standard 4-cyl passenger car including CTP.
- CTP: bundled into rego; QLD lets you choose your insurer (Suncorp, Allianz, QBE, RACQ) at the counter.
- Transfer fee: ~$32.
- Number plates: standard plates included; personalised extra.

Common questions
Common questions
Can I drive the car from Sydney to Brisbane on NSW plates?
Yes. Buy it 'registered' from the seller and NSW rego remains legally valid until expiry. You must transfer to QLD rego within a reasonable time of becoming a QLD resident — TMR expects registration within 14 days of establishing residency.
Does QLD accept my Sydney PPI report for anything?
Not for legal registration — you still need the QLD Safety Certificate. But it does give you documented evidence of the car's condition on the day of purchase, which is useful for insurance claims and future resale.
What if I'm on the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast?
Same workflow. Transport drops you at your address (or to a nominated depot). Any AIS across QLD can issue the Safety Certificate. If you're in a regional area, factor an extra day of transport.
Should I get the EV battery add-on?
Yes, absolutely, if you're buying a Sydney EV. QLD's high summer temperatures accelerate battery degradation, so understanding the State of Health (SoH) before purchase is genuinely valuable. Our AVILOO-based battery test gives you the exact SoH figure.
