Carsales and Facebook Marketplace have made Sydney a national used-car market. A specific-spec Prado, a rare colour combo Mustang, a low-km Land Cruiser — the exact car you want is often 1,000 km away. Flying up for every listing you're keen on is neither practical nor cheap.

This is the interstate buyer's playbook. It's how a Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Darwin or Hobart buyer inspects, negotiates, pays for, and transports a Sydney car without ever setting foot on the seller's driveway.

The interstate buying flow, step by step

1. 1.You find the listing. Screenshot it, save the URL, note the asking price.
2. 2.You do the paper checks first — PPSR ($2), CarFacts or CarHistory ($37). If anything flags, stop here.
3. 3.You have a phone conversation with the seller. Confirm they own it, ask about service history, get honest damage disclosure. Trust your gut here — if the vibe is off, walk.
4. 4.You book our Comprehensive or Elite inspection with the interstate video add-on.
5. 5.Our inspector attends the seller's Sydney address. You join a live video call during the walkaround (WhatsApp / FaceTime / Zoom — inspector's choice).

The live video walkaround — how it works

For interstate buyers we run the entire inspection with the buyer on a live video call. The inspector wears an earpiece and phone chest mount; you see what they see. You can ask questions in real time. "Show me the driver-side rear panel closer." "Can you open the boot and lift the carpet?" "Start it cold — I want to hear." It's the closest thing to being there without being there.

• Total inspection time: ~90 minutes for Comprehensive, ~2 hours for Elite.
• You don't need to be on the call the whole time — most buyers join for the walkaround start (20 mins), the test drive (25 mins) and the wrap-up (15 mins).
• We record the call with your permission — you keep the recording as part of the deliverables.
• Time zone: we can run early morning Sydney (7am AEDT = 6am AEST Brisbane, 4am AWST Perth) or late afternoon to catch WA business hours.

Payment: never wire before inspection. Ever.

The single most common interstate scam: seller wants deposit or full payment via bank transfer, promises to ship the car once payment clears. Sometimes the car is real and the seller flakes. Sometimes the car never existed. Sometimes the seller is real but the account isn't theirs. In every case, you're chasing money you'll never see again.

Payment options that work for interstate buys:

• Bank transfer on the day of transport pickup, once the transporter driver has confirmed vehicle identity against ID at the seller's address.
• Bank cheque presented at pickup — traditional but reliable.
• Escrow services (Escrow.com, PayPal Goods & Services for smaller amounts) — small fee, big protection.
• Dealer-to-dealer transfer if buying from a dealer — dealer-arranged transport and payment through dealer's finance system.

Transport: what it actually costs from Sydney in 2026

Open trailer is fine for daily-drive cars. Enclosed trailer is worth it for anything over $80k, any classic, any freshly-painted vehicle, or any European car with delicate paint. Reputable transporters in this space: PrixCar, CEVA, Ceva Vehicle Logistics, JCL Vehicle Transport, Southern Cross Vehicle Transport.

Rego, insurance and the interstate transfer paperwork

Buying interstate means you'll register the car in your home state, not NSW. The process:

• Seller cancels their NSW rego OR you buy 'unregistered' and transport on trailer only.
• You pay stamp duty in your home state, based on the purchase price. Rates vary: VIC 4.2%, QLD 3-5%, WA 3-6.5%.
• You'll need a roadworthy inspection in your home state before rego — VIC RWC ($150-300), QLD Safety Certificate ($90-150), WA plate inspection.
• Your Sydney pre-purchase inspection report is not a substitute for the home-state roadworthy, but it dramatically lowers the risk that your car fails the roadworthy.
• Total interstate paperwork cost typically $400 – $800 on top of the car price and transport.

Insurance for the transport itself

Two coverages to check:

• The transporter's carrier insurance — covers damage during transit. Confirm the excess (usually $2,000-5,000) and coverage cap. Cheap transporters often have low caps.
• Your own comprehensive policy — arrange it to activate the day of pickup, in your home state, on the assumption of NSW-plate car in transit. Most insurers (NRMA, RACV, AAMI, Allianz) handle this — you provide VIN, purchase price, and expected registration state.

The scam patterns we see repeatedly

• Seller can't do video call 'because their phone camera is broken' — they don't have the car.
• Seller insists on payment via cryptocurrency to 'avoid bank fees' — 100% scam.
• Price is 30%+ below market for the spec — 90% scam.
• Seller wants to 'ship the car to you first, you pay after inspection at your end' — 100% scam. Legitimate sellers never ship a car before payment.
• Seller's phone number is a mobile with an area code that doesn't match Sydney (02) or a genuine mobile prefix — check carefully.
• Facebook profile is less than 6 months old with no personal posts — high-risk.

What our inspection changes for interstate buyers

The inspection is not just a report — it's the interstate buyer's proxy. It confirms:

• The car physically exists at the address given.
• The seller is the person on the registration.
• The VIN plate matches the compliance plate matches the PPSR record.

What if the seller won't allow a mobile inspection at their address?

A private seller who refuses inspection to an interstate buyer is telling you the car is not what they claim. Walk away. Dealers routinely allow it. In our experience, 100% of private-seller inspection refusals turn out to be justified reasons to walk.

How do I hand over payment if I'm not in Sydney?

Two normal patterns: (1) bank transfer at the moment the transporter picks up, once driver confirms identity — you're on the phone to confirm; (2) if buying from a dealer, dealer-arranged escrow via their finance system. Never send money before pickup.
