Kia Cerato and Hyundai i30 — the value used buy of 2026

If you want a cheap, reliable, warranty-backed first car, the 2018-2022 i30 and Cerato are the smartest used buys on the market.

If a parent rings us asking 'what's a sensible $18k first car for my P-plater?' our answer is almost always a 2019-2021 Hyundai i30 or Kia Cerato. Both share the Hyundai/Kia 2.0L Atkinson-cycle engine and 6-speed auto — boring, durable, cheap to fix, still under warranty.

What's good

  • 5- (Hyundai) or 7-year (Kia) factory warranty — transferable. Most 2020+ examples have 1-3 years remaining.
  • AEB standard from 2018 (i30) and 2019 (Cerato).
  • Parts everywhere — every wrecker, every Repco, often cheaper than Toyota equivalents.
  • Insurance for under-25s is significantly cheaper than Mazda 3 or Corolla equivalents.

Known faults

  1. 1.Theta II GDI engine (2.4L in some Tucsons/Sportages, NOT in i30/Cerato 2.0L) — separate recall, don't confuse.
  2. 2.GDI carbon build-up on intake valves — rough idle by 100k. Walnut blast service $400-600.
  3. 3.Boot strut failure — common at 4-5 years. $80 fix.
  4. 4.Infotainment freeze — Android Auto disconnects on 2018-19 examples; software update available.
  5. 5.Brake pad life is short — many examples need pads at 30-40k. Cheap fix.

Trim guide

  • i30 Active — cloth, basic alloys. Fine for a first car. Most common used spec.
  • i30 Elite — leather, sat-nav, larger wheels. Worth $1.5-2.5k more.
  • i30 N-Line — turbo 1.6L, sport tune, sport seats. Different beast — higher insurance, fun to drive.
  • Cerato S/Sport/Sport+/GT — Sport+ is the sweet spot. GT is turbo, fun, but premium.

Common questions

Which one is better — i30 or Cerato?

Mechanically identical for 95% of buyers. Cerato has the longer warranty (7 yr vs 5), i30 has slightly better resale. Coin toss.

Is the diesel worth it?

Only if you commute 60+ km/day. Most Sydney buyers should stick with 2.0L petrol — diesel premium is hard to recover.
