Kia Cerato and Hyundai i30 — the value used buy of 2026

If a parent rings us asking 'what's a sensible $18k first car for my P-plater?' our answer is almost always a 2019-2021 Hyundai i30 or Kia Cerato. The i30 hatch (PD) uses a 2.0-litre direct-injected (GDi) four making 120 kW; the Cerato (BD) uses a 2.0-litre port-injected (MPi) four making 112 kW. Both pair with a 6-speed torque-converter auto. Simple, cheap to fix, and — on younger Ceratos — possibly still under warranty.

Note: the i30 Sedan sold from 2020 is a different car (CN7, Elantra-based) with a CVT-type automatic. This guide covers the i30 hatch.

What's good

• Factory warranty: Hyundai 5 years, Kia 7 years, both unlimited km, and transferable to later owners. As at 2026, most 2020–2021 i30s are already out of warranty; a 2020 Cerato has roughly a year left, and a 2022 Cerato around three. Check the warranty start date with a dealer using the VIN.
• AEB: standard across the Cerato BD range from its 2018 launch. On early i30 Go and Active, AEB was part of an optional SmartSense pack (auto only) — check the car actually has it.
• Parts everywhere — every wrecker, every Repco, often cheaper than Toyota equivalents.

Known faults

Recalls to check first (free at any dealer — check the VIN on vehiclerecalls.gov.au):

• Kia Cerato BD 2020–2022, 2.0 MPI (REC-006395): piston rings may not meet specification, risking engine failure, stalling, oil leaks or fire. Kia inspects the engine, replaces it if damaged, and applies an ECU monitoring update. Ask for proof it's been done.
• Hyundai i30 PD 2020–2021, 2.0 and 1.6 turbo N Line (REC-006422): the fuel pump impeller can deform and stall the engine. Ask for proof of the fuel pump replacement.

Things we check on every one:

• Oil level and condition — check the dipstick. Low oil between services is a warning sign on any high-km engine.
• On the i30's direct-injected 2.0 and on any 1.6 turbo (i30 N Line, Cerato GT): rough cold idle or hesitation can indicate intake carbon build-up.
• On 7-speed DCT cars (i30 N Line, Cerato GT): judder or hesitation on low-speed take-off.

Trim guide

• i30 Active — cloth, basic alloys. Fine for a first car. Most common used spec.
• i30 Elite — leather, sat-nav, larger wheels.
• i30 N Line — 1.6 turbo (direct-injected) with a 7-speed dual-clutch auto. Different beast — higher insurance, fun to drive, and the DCT needs a careful test drive.
• Cerato S / Sport / Sport+ / GT — Sport+ is the sweet spot. GT (from 2019) is a 1.6 turbo with a 7-speed dual-clutch.

Inspecting a first car for a P-plater

Cars in this bracket are usually bought quickly, often by a parent who is not going to be the one driving, and frequently from a seller who has owned it for a short time. The checks that matter most are the unglamorous ones — the systems that keep a new driver out of trouble rather than the features listed in the ad.

• Brake pad and rotor life measured at each corner, because a new driver brakes harder and later than an experienced one.
• Tyre tread measured per corner, with the wear pattern read for alignment and suspension issues.
• Battery and charging tested under load — a car that will spend its life on short suburban trips is hard on a tired battery.
• OBD-II scan for stored and pending codes, including anything hiding behind a recently cleared dash.
• Road test on public roads, checking steering, braking and gearbox behaviour rather than the sound system.
• Service history read against the schedule, which on a budget-bracket car is where deferred maintenance shows up.

Common questions

Which one is better — i30 or Cerato?

Similar size and running costs. The Cerato has the longer warranty (7 years vs 5), port injection and AEB standard from launch; the i30 hatch has slightly more power. Check the relevant recall on either one before you buy.

Is the diesel worth it?

Only early PD i30s (not the Cerato) were offered with a 1.6 diesel in Australia. For most Sydney buyers the 2.0 petrol is the simpler choice — short-trip driving is hard on a diesel particulate filter.

Is any repair cover included with the inspection?
