Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series Buyer's Guide Sydney: V8 and 2.8 Utes, Wagons and Troopies

V8 1VD-FTV injectors and DPF, dual-cab chassis cracks, dust ingress, rust in the pillars and the new 2.8 four-cylinder automatic — the three very different 70 Series on the Sydney used market.

The 70 Series is the vehicle Sydney tradies, farm buyers and touring families fight over, and it is also the one most likely to have been loaded past its limits every day of its life. Between the V8 era (2007–2024), the DPF update (late 2016) and the four-cylinder automatic (2023 on), there are three quite different 70s on the used market. This guide separates them and lists what actually fails.

Known issues to check

  • V8 injectors. The 1VD-FTV's injectors are the big-ticket item; failing ones cause rough idle, smoke and eventually engine damage. We read live injector correction values through the OBD-II port and listen to the cold start — that is a cheaper test than the invoice you get after buying blind.
  • DPF (late 2016 on). Utes that do short suburban runs never complete regeneration: limp mode, smoke and warning lights follow. Regen history and soot load are read on every tier.
  • Dust ingress. The stock airbox seal is poor; a dusted engine shows up as turbo noise, low power and limp mode. A sealed aftermarket airbox is a good sign, not a bad one.
  • Chassis cracks on dual-cab 79s. Overloading and heavy canopies over rough roads crack the rails behind the cab. We inspect the chassis with the undertray off where it is fitted, safely accessible and permitted, and with the tray cleared of clutter where possible; a repaired crack must be professionally welded and braced.
  • Manual gearbox and clutch. Crunching between second and third means synchro wear (often from the wrong oil); a tuned V8 eats stock clutches.
  • Rust. A-pillars and the windscreen surround are the expensive ones — repairs can run into five figures — followed by door bottoms and the rear tub.
  • Wheel bearings and front end. Growling from the front at speed and play at the wheel are routine on hard-worked utes.
  • Alternator and auxiliary wiring. Under-sized alternators plus dual-battery and fridge setups cause charging faults; amateur wiring is a fire risk.
  • Door seals and cabin noise. Not a defect as such, but fumes and dust in the cabin indicate seals past their life.
  • Modifications. GVM upgrades, coil conversions, tunes and lifts are common; each needs engineering paperwork to be legal and insurable in NSW.

What we check on a 70 Series

Ramps up and the undertray off on Comprehensive and Elite where it is fitted, safely accessible and permitted: leak sources at the timing cover, rear main and diffs; every leaf, shackle, bush and mount; chassis rails inspected along their full length with a light, not a glance. OBD-II scan for injector data, DPF status and stored codes on every tier. Cold start and idle quality. Rust probe points on the pillars and windscreen. Tray, canopy and towbar mounting checked for cracking and for weight the chassis was never designed to carry. Brake and tyre life measured per corner; steering and wheel-bearing play checked on the ground.

Which inspection to book

Comprehensive at minimum — the chassis, injector and DPF checks are the whole point. On any dual-cab, any V8 over $70,000 or any heavily modified tourer, book Elite: senior inspector, every-panel paint readings (repaired rust shows up as filler), on-site negotiation and written repair cover of up to $3,000 for 30 days.

Common questions

V8 or the new 2.8 four-cylinder?

The V8 is the one buyers want and it holds value; the 2.8 auto is easier to drive in Sydney traffic, cheaper to service and comes with a modern warranty. Both need the same underbody and load-history checks.

How do I know if a dual-cab has been overloaded?

Sagging rear leaves, cracked or repaired chassis rails, bent tray mounts and a GVM plate that doesn't match the accessories fitted. We photograph all of it.

No. A deleted or tampered DPF is an emissions offence in NSW and a warranty and insurance problem — we flag it if we see it.

Can you inspect one on a work site or farm?

Yes, anywhere in our service area — Sydney metro, the Central Coast, Newcastle and Wollongong.
