Toyota RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid Buyer's Guide Sydney: The Waiting-List Car, Second-Hand
XA40 versus XA50, the 2019 front lower arm recall, the hybrid fuel-tank fix, the 12V battery, hybrid battery health and the 10-year battery warranty rules Sydney buyers should check.
The RAV4 Hybrid spent years as Australia's hardest car to buy new, so the used market is full of low-kilometre examples that sold for close to new price. Prices have normalised, the first hybrids are past 100,000 km, and the questions Sydney buyers ask are the right ones: is the hybrid battery still under warranty, were the recalls done, and why won't the tank fill? This guide covers both the XA40 (2013–2018) and the current XA50 (2019 on).
The generations
| XA40 (2013–2018) | XA50 (2019 on) | |

| Diesel | 2.2 turbo-diesel (to 2018) | None |
| Hybrid | None in Australia | 2.5 hybrid, 2WD and AWD, 160 kW combined |
| Grades | GX, GXL, Cruiser | GX, GXL, Cruiser, Edge, XSE (2023 on) |
| Facelift | 2016 | 2022 (screen and equipment), 2025 update |
Known issues to check
- Front lower suspension arm recall (XA50 built 25 Sep–17 Oct 2019). Toyota Australia recalled 1,552 petrol and hybrid RAV4s because cracks could form in the front lower arms and the arm could separate from the wheel assembly. It is a free fix (about three hours). We check the build date and confirm the campaign is closed against the VIN.
- Hybrid fuel tank filling short (2019–2020 hybrid). A widely reported issue where the tank would only take part of its capacity; Toyota developed a fix. Ask for the dealer record showing it was done; a hybrid that "fills in 30 litres" has not had it.
- 12-volt auxiliary battery. The hybrid's small 12V battery drains if the car sits or if accessories are left on; the symptom is a car that won't "ready" and needs a jump. We load-test the 12V battery on every tier.
- Hybrid battery health. The traction battery is generally durable, but its condition is invisible without a scan. Our EV/hybrid battery test ($199 add-on on any tier) reads cell-block voltages and state of health.
- Battery warranty rules. Toyota Australia's hybrid battery warranty runs up to 10 years provided the car has an annual hybrid health check at a Toyota dealer as part of servicing. A car that missed its checks has a shorter battery warranty — a real value difference between two identical-looking RAV4s.
- 2.0 CVT (XA40). Check for shudder and hesitation at low speed; fluid condition matters.
- 2.2 diesel (XA40). Short-trip cars: DPF regeneration history and oil level (diesel dilution raises it) are the checks.
- Recalls generally. Several Toyota models had low-pressure fuel pump and other campaigns in 2019–2021; we run every RAV4's VIN against the current recall register rather than rely on the model list.
- Infotainment and camera. Screen freezes and reversing-camera drop-outs are reported on early XA50s; usually software.
What we check on a RAV4
OBD-II and hybrid-system scan on every tier: stored and pending codes, hybrid battery block voltages with the add-on, 12V battery load test. On Comprehensive and Elite the undertray comes off where it is fitted, safely accessible and permitted, for a proper leak check at the engine, transaxle and (on AWD) the rear coupling, and every bush and mount is inspected — the XA50's front lower arms in particular. Brake and tyre life per corner; hybrid brake feel and regen operation on the road test; CVT behaviour on 2.0 petrols; DPF data on the diesel. Body: paint gauge (spot check on Comprehensive, every panel on Elite) — RAV4s are family cars and small hits get touched up.

Hybrids with full Toyota history and the battery warranty intact sit at the top of each range; ex-rental and fleet cars at the bottom.
Which inspection to book
Comprehensive ($329, or $296 with code SAVE10) plus the EV/hybrid battery test ($199) on any hybrid — that combination answers the battery question and the underbody question in one visit. On a Cruiser or Edge above $45,000, Elite adds the every-panel paint readings, on-site negotiation and written repair cover of up to $3,000 for 30 days.
Common questions
How long does a RAV4 hybrid battery last?
Toyota's hybrid batteries commonly exceed 250,000 km. What matters is the state of health today and whether the 10-year warranty is intact, both of which we can tell you on the day.
Should I avoid the 2019–2020 hybrids because of the fuel-tank issue?
No — confirm the fix has been done, and confirm the suspension recall if the build date is in the window.
Petrol or hybrid?
In Sydney traffic the hybrid's fuel economy advantage is large and it holds value better. The 2.0 petrol is the value buy if the kilometres are low and the CVT is smooth.
Is an ex-rental RAV4 a bad buy?
Not automatically. Rental cars are serviced on time but driven by everyone; the paint gauge and the underbody check tell the real story.
