Pre-purchase car inspection in Blaxland.

Blaxland is the first mountain town above the plain, and its cars are commuters first and mountain cars second. The motorway starts at the bottom of the hill, most working residents drive it every day, and every one of those trips begins with the long descent past Lapstone and ends with the climb back up it. That produces a car with two kinds of wear at once: the steady, fast, high-kilometre wear of a motorway commuter, and the concentrated brake, clutch and cooling stress of a daily mountain grade. It also produces cars that have lived in fog, frost and bushfire smoke, and that are often sold to buyers coming up from Sydney who have never driven the hill. We come to the car, complete a structured inspection, run a professional multi-module diagnostic scan, road test it on the grade and at motorway speed, and hand you a written, photographed report on the spot with a plain verdict and costed repairs. We do not sell cars and the seller pays us nothing.

Local conditions

Motorway commuting with a mountain at each end

The descent to the plain is long enough to cook brake fluid and rotors if it is done on the pedal, and the climb back is long enough to load a cooling system and transmission every single evening. Between the two sits a motorway commute that wears bearings, tyres, bushes and driveline joints at speed. Fog and frost then put moisture on the brakes overnight, and the bush edge adds animal strikes and smoke.

Brakes cooked on the daily descent

We measure pad and rotor thickness against the manufacturer's minimum, test for the pulsing that indicates heat-scored or warped rotors, assess brake fluid condition for moisture, check caliper slides for seizing and inspect hoses for perishing and swelling. A commuter that does the descent on the brakes every day with old fluid is a soft pedal waiting to happen.

Clutch and transmission wear on the climb

Manual commuters wear clutches on the climb from the motorway; automatics run their fluid hot. We assess clutch bite, slip under load and dual-mass flywheel rattle, and on automatics check fluid condition and colour, flare and delay, and stored temperature and slip faults.

Motorway kilometres at speed

Steady motorway running wears wheel bearings, tyres, suspension bushes, shock absorbers and driveline joints while leaving the engine looking healthy. We road test at motorway speed and check every bearing and joint for play, because these faults do not show at suburban speed.

Fog, frost and moisture on the brakes

Mountain mornings leave brake rotors and calipers wet and cold. Cars that sit develop pitted rotors, seized slides and binding handbrake cables faster here than on the plain. We check rotor surface condition, caliper movement and handbrake operation on every car.

Bushfire and smoke exposure

The lower mountains are bushfire-prone and smoke-affected vehicles come back onto the market. We look for heat-distorted plastics and lenses, discoloured or crazed paint on horizontal surfaces, shrunken rubber seals, smoke residue in the ventilation system and headlining, and check the cabin filter.

Animal strike and front-end repair

Wildlife on the highway at dawn and dusk produces front-end repairs. We take paint-depth readings on every panel, check headlight and glass date stamps for mismatches, inspect radiator and condenser fins and supports, and look behind the bumper for crush damage and cheap repair.

Cooling systems loaded every evening

We pressure-test for leaks, check coolant condition and concentration, inspect plastic cooling components for crazing and weeping, verify both fan stages and watch thermostat behaviour through warm-up, because a marginal cooling system fails on the climb, in summer, with the air conditioning on.

Worth arranging before we arrive in Blaxland

  • Ask how the car is used and whether it does the descent and climb daily.
  • Ask when the brake fluid was last changed, not just the pads.
  • Ask whether the clutch has ever been replaced, if it is a manual.
  • Ask whether the car has ever been in a bushfire-affected area or smoke-damaged.
  • Ask whether it has ever hit an animal or had front-end repair.
  • Ask for the car to be left cold overnight for our arrival.
How it works

Booked, inspected, reported.

You don't need to be there and you don't need to move the car. Timing depends on inspector availability in your area and on when the seller can make the vehicle available — we confirm a time with you once we've spoken to them.

  1. 1

    Book online or call us

Send the listing and the address of the car. Tell us if there is anything specific you want checked.

  2. 2

We arrange the time with the seller

We contact the seller or the dealership directly and lock in a time that suits both sides, based on inspector availability in your area. You don't need to be there.

  3. 3

The inspection happens at the car

A qualified mobile inspector attends the vehicle where it is and works through the full checklist, including a road test.

  4. 4

You get the report before you commit

Comprehensive and Elite reports are issued on site. Essential reports are delivered the same day. Every report ends with a plain-English recommendation and a phone call if you want to talk it through.

Straight answers

What a mobile inspection can't tell you.

A pre-purchase inspection in Blaxland removes most of the risk in a used-car purchase. It does not remove all of it, and you should know where the edges are before you book.

  • We do not dismantle the engine, remove the gearbox or pull interior trim, so faults only visible during disassembly can't be ruled out. On Comprehensive and Elite, the engine undertray is removed where fitted, safely accessible and permitted.
  • We work at the vehicle's location, not on a hoist. Underbody checks are done on portable ramps where safe and permitted; seized fasteners, unsafe access or seller refusal are recorded as inspection limitations.
  • A cold-start assessment is only possible if the seller leaves the engine untouched before we arrive. If the car has been warmed up, we record that in the report.
  • The road test runs on public roads at legal speeds, so it can't reproduce every intermittent fault or a fault that only appears under load or after long distances.
  • A PPSR check reports what is registered against the VIN on the day. It cannot show unreported damage or work done off the books.
  • The report describes the vehicle's condition on the day of inspection. It is not a warranty and not a valuation guarantee.
