Katoomba sits a kilometre above sea level, and its cars live in a climate the rest of Sydney never sees. Frost most winter mornings, occasional snow, persistent damp under the tree canopy, fog that lasts for days, and a town full of steep streets and unsealed tracks running out to the valleys. Its used-car market is just as particular. Long-term locals selling 4WDs and wagons that have done years of mountain work, tourism businesses turning over hire and shuttle vehicles, and tree-changers selling cars that were bought for Sydney and never adapted to the cold. Almost none of it is visible in a listing, and most of it is expensive. We come to the car, complete a structured inspection, run a professional multi-module diagnostic scan, road test it on the hills, and hand you a written, photographed report on the spot with a plain verdict and costed repairs. Cold is hard on batteries, starters, glow plugs and oil. Damp is hard on brakes, electrical connectors and every seam and cavity that can hold water. Fog and moss are hard on paint, seals and drains. And the mountain roads out to the valleys are hard on 4WD drivelines and underbodies. A Katoomba car needs to be assessed for all of it, ideally on a cold morning.
We insist on a genuine cold start wherever possible, because a frosty morning is when a tired battery, worn starter, failing glow plugs, timing chain rattle or a cylinder with poor compression shows itself. We test battery condition and cranking under load, and on diesels check glow plug operation and cold-start fault history.
Persistent damp puts corrosion into sill seams, door bottoms, tailgate seams, subframe mounts and every fastener under the car, and moss into the drains. We inspect the underbody and cavities on every car, check cowl, sunroof and door drains, and look for the musty interior, corroded seat-rail fasteners and under-dash connector corrosion that a permanently damp car develops.
Fog and frost leave rotors and calipers wet and cold for days. We check rotor surface condition for pitting, caliper slides for seizing, handbrake cables for binding, and brake fluid for moisture, and we measure pad and rotor thickness against the manufacturer's minimum after the descent that every Katoomba car does.
Tourism turns over vehicles constantly. We look for the indicators: kilometres far beyond the car's age, fleet service stamps, decal shadows and fitment marks, rear seat and door wear from constant passengers, and stored fault history consistent with heavy use by many drivers.
Wagons and 4WDs that run the valley tracks wear their transfer cases, differentials, CV joints and underbodies. We inspect the underbody for impact damage, check driveline joints and diff bushes for play, test four-wheel-drive engagement and low range where fitted, and check the air intake and filters for dust and water.
Tree-changers bring Sydney cars up with summer-weight oil, tired batteries and coolant at the wrong concentration for frost. We check coolant concentration and condition, oil condition, battery state and hose and belt condition for the cold cracking that mountain winters produce.
Ultraviolet is stronger at altitude. We inspect paint clearcoat, dashboard plastics, headlight lenses and rubber seals for the degradation that a decade of mountain sun and frost produces.
You don't need to be there and you don't need to move the car. Timing depends on inspector availability in your area and on when the seller can make the vehicle available — we confirm a time with you once we've spoken to them.
