Cars adapt to none of that. They simply wear differently, and a used car that has spent its life up here needs to be assessed with that in mind rather than as a generic suburban car. Descents destroy brakes, because most drivers do the long run down the highway on the brake pedal rather than the gearbox. Climbs stress cooling systems and transmissions continuously. Cold mornings are hard on batteries, glow plugs and oil that is overdue. Damp, shaded driveways under tree cover mean blocked drains, water in footwells and corrosion in places a coastal-focused inspection would never think to look.
We measure front and rear pad thickness and rotor thickness against the manufacturer's stamped minimum, test for the pulsing that indicates heat-scored or warped rotors, check caliper slides for seizing, inspect hoses for perishing and swelling, and assess brake fluid condition for moisture. We also test park brake holding performance on a genuine gradient rather than on the flat.
Pressure test for leaks, coolant condition and concentration, contamination and incorrect coolant mixing, radiator and condenser condition, both fan stages verified, thermostat behaviour through warm-up, water pump condition and hose and belt integrity. On the engine families known for head gasket trouble, we look specifically for the indicators.
Fluid condition and colour, shift quality across the full range, flare and delay, converter lock-up behaviour, and a scan for stored temperature, ratio and slip faults. On CVTs we test for light-throttle shudder. On dual-clutch transmissions we assess low-speed creep and clutch judder and check mechatronic fault history.
We insist on a genuine cold start wherever possible, because that is when a tired battery, worn starter, failing glow plugs, timing chain rattle or a cylinder with poor compression will show itself. A car that has been warmed up before we arrive is a car that has been prepared for you, and we note that in the report.
Cowl drains, sunroof drains, door drains and boot seals all block with leaf litter up here. We lift carpets, check under seats, test the spare wheel well and boot corners for damp, inspect the cabin filter housing, and look for corroded seat-rail fasteners and under-dash connector corrosion.
Sumps, transmission pans, exhausts, undertrays, subframes and suspension arms all take hits on steep driveway transitions and unsealed access tracks. We inspect for impact damage, welded or resealed sumps, crushed exhaust sections and dust ingestion in the air intake and filters.
Animal strikes are a genuine feature of mountain driving, and so is tree-limb damage in storms. We take paint-depth readings on every panel, check light and glass date stamps for mismatches, look for radiator and condenser fin damage and bent supports, inspect behind the bumpers for crush and repair, and check the roof and bonnet for impact repair.
