Cremorne runs along Military Road between Neutral Bay and Mosman, on a peninsula of steep side streets and older walk-up blocks. The peninsula geography does most of the work here — short steep streets, tight garages under 1960s and 70s walk-ups, and a single arterial that funnels everything.
The streets falling away from Military Road toward Shell Cove and Mosman Bay are properly steep. That is useful: a hill start and a controlled descent load the clutch or torque converter, the handbrake and the brakes in a way flat suburban running never does, and it is where a slipping transmission or a glazed handbrake usually shows itself. We build a gradient leg into the road test here rather than staying on the flat.
Much of the 2090 unit stock is older low-rise with single lock-up garages, tandem bays or car stackers behind a roller door. Those spaces rarely leave room to open a door fully, let alone stand back from a panel. Where the car is in one, we ask for it to be brought out onto the street or the driveway apron for the body and paint assessment, and note in the report if that was not possible.
Cremorne sits on a harbour peninsula, and cars kept here spend their lives in salt-laden air. On any older vehicle we spend extra time on the door and tailgate drain paths, the underside of the boot lip, roof rail mounts, and the condition of alloy and fastener surfaces near the sills — the places where salt exposure shows before the paint does.
Military Road is a clearway on weekday peaks and congested well outside them. That affects when a road test is informative and when it is just idling, so we schedule the drive component around the clearway windows and keep the static checks — scan tool, fluids, body, interior — for the time the car is stationary at the seller's address.

A pre-purchase inspection in Cremorne removes most of the risk in a used-car purchase. It does not remove all of it, and you should know where the edges are before you book.

The gradients off Military Road load the driveline and the brakes far harder than flat running, which makes them a better test of a slipping automatic, a tired clutch, a weak handbrake or brake shudder. Where the car is registered, insured and the seller consents, we include a gradient leg.
You should have it looked at properly rather than assumed either way. Salt air accelerates corrosion at drain paths, seams and fastener surfaces, and it is not something a quick walk-around finds. We check the specific locations where it starts and photograph what we find, so the report shows the actual condition of that car rather than a generalisation about the suburb.
