Pre-purchase car inspection in South-West Sydney.
A qualified mobile mechanic comes to the car — a Hume Highway dealership, a driveway at Casula or Bonnyrigg, a trade ute for sale out at Wetherill Park or Leppington. 150+ checkpoints inspection, PPSR check, photo report with a clear verdict. From $199.

Why a pre-purchase inspection matters in South-West Sydney.
South-West Sydney trades differently to the rest of the city. Liverpool and Fairfield sit at the centre of a very large, very active private market, and the vehicle mix skews hard toward work: dual-cab utes, vans, trade wagons, ex-fleet sedans and high-kilometre imports of Japanese and Korean family cars. Those vehicles are usually bought to earn money, and they are almost always sold once they start costing it.
That is not a reason to avoid the region — the value here is genuinely better than the eastern half of Sydney. It is a reason to inspect properly. A work vehicle can be mechanically sound and structurally tired at the same time, or freshly detailed and hiding a driveline that is one tow away from a bill bigger than the purchase price. Neither condition is visible from a listing or a lap around the block.
An independent pre-purchase inspection gives you documented mechanical condition, load-and-tow wear, repair and structural history, live fault-code data, and the finance and write-off check — before you commit to a private, as-is sale with no warranty behind it.

Buying on the Hume Highway dealer strip
The South-West used-car market — and where it catches buyers out.
The dominant pattern here is load. Utes and vans in this corridor carry weight, tow trailers and plant, and spend a lot of their life in stop-start traffic on the Hume and the M5. That combination punishes clutches, torque converters, rear springs, shock absorbers, wheel bearings and — on diesels — the particulate filter, which never gets the sustained highway run it needs to burn off soot properly.
The second pattern is the high-kilometre family car sold privately for cash. Corollas, i30s, Camrys, Rav4s and CX-5s move constantly through this market, often with informal service history and a repair record nobody can produce. They are frequently fine. When they are not, the failures cluster predictably: cam-chain wear, oil consumption, a gearbox that has never had a fluid service, and warning lights cleared shortly before the inspection.
The third is modification and repair. Aftermarket suspension, wheels, lighting and tuning are common, as is panel work done outside a manufacturer network. Neither is automatically a problem, but both need to be identified and assessed rather than discovered later. Everything below is what we keep writing up on South-West inspections — measurable, photographed, and useful at the negotiating table.
150+ checkpoints inspection, every inspection.
The documented checklist a workshop would run before a major service or warranty handover — done on site, in front of the car you're about to buy.
Engine & driveline
Oil condition and leaks, coolant condition, head-gasket signs, timing chain rattle, turbo health, engine mounts, exhaust smoke under load, gearbox shift quality (auto, DCT, CVT, manual), clutch wear, diff and driveshaft play.
Brakes, steering & suspension
Pad and rotor thickness measured, brake fluid moisture, handbrake travel, steering rack play, tie rods, ball joints, control-arm bushes, sway-bar links, shock absorber leaks, ride height, wheel-bearing noise.
Tyres & wheels
Tread depth on all four corners with photos, tyre age (DOT date), uneven wear indicating alignment or suspension faults, kerb damage, spare condition, locking wheel-nut key.
Body, paint & structure
Panel-gap symmetry, repaint detection with a paint depth gauge, overspray, weld marks, chassis-rail and inner-guard inspection, underbody rust, boot floor, A/B/C-pillar integrity.
Electrical & electronics
Battery state of health, alternator output, every light, wipers, central locking, windows, infotainment, cameras and sensors, cruise control, ADAS warnings, full fault-code scan on Comprehensive and Elite.
Interior, safety & comfort
Airbag warning history, seatbelt operation, ISOFIX anchors, climate-control performance, sunroof seals, water-ingress signs, odour and mould indicators, wear against claimed kilometres.
Road test
Cold start, idle quality, gearbox behaviour under load and overrun, brake balance and pull, steering centring, highway-speed vibration, suspension noise over bumps, ABS and stability control.
Identity & history
VIN, compliance and build plates verified against the registration. PPSR check confirms no finance owing, not written off, not stolen. Odometer cross-checked against service history where available.
EV & hybrid (add-on)
High-voltage battery state of health, module readings where the platform allows, charging-port and inverter check, regen behaviour, 12V auxiliary battery and thermal management — issued as a certificate.
The faults we keep finding around South-West Sydney.
Real issues flagged on inspections in this region — and what they typically cost to put right.
Diesel particulate filters clogged by short runs
We pull regeneration history, soot and ash loading and differential-pressure data straight from the ECU. A ute that only ever runs Liverpool to a job site and back can be most of the way through a filter's life with no warning light showing yet.
Towing and load wear on the rear end
Sagging or cracked leaf springs, leaking shocks, worn shackle bushes, stressed tow-bar mounts and rear crossmember corrosion. We measure ride height side to side and photograph every mounting point rather than judging it from a walk-around.
Clutch and torque-converter fatigue
Shudder under light throttle, high clutch take-up, slipping under load and gearbox temperature history that shows repeated overheating. We road-test deliberately under load, which is the only condition where these faults reliably appear.
Cleared fault codes before the sale
Clearing a dashboard light does not clear the evidence. We read pending and permanent codes, readiness monitors and freeze-frame data — a car with every monitor freshly reset has usually had its memory wiped in the last day or two.
Cam-chain, oil-burn and neglected fluids
On the high-kilometre Japanese and Korean cars that dominate private listings here, we listen for chain rattle on cold start, check oil level and condition against the claimed service interval, look for consumption evidence at the plugs and exhaust, and verify gearbox and coolant fluid condition.
Non-genuine panels and undocumented repair
Paint-depth readings panel by panel, panel-gap symmetry, overspray in door shuts and engine bay, replacement glass, weld and clamp marks on rails. Repair is not automatically a deal-breaker — undisclosed structural repair is.
Modifications that carry defect and insurance risk
Lift and lowering kits, wheel and tyre packages outside the tyre placard, exhaust and intake changes, aftermarket lighting and ECU tunes. We document what has been done and where it creates a compliance or insurance exposure for you as the next owner.
Wheel, brake and steering wear from stop-start traffic
Measured pad and rotor thickness rather than a guess, brake-fluid moisture testing, wheel-bearing noise at speed, and play in tie rods, ball joints and control-arm bushes — the components that wear fastest in constant Hume Highway traffic.

Buying from a dealer vs a private seller.
Dealer
- A statutory warranty applies to most vehicles under 10 years / 160,000 km — limited in time and scope. Read it before you sign.
- A reputable yard will welcome an independent mechanic on site. Hesitation is a red flag.
- Dealer-prep fees, paint and interior protection, and extended warranties are all negotiable.
Private seller
- Strictly sold as-is. No statutory warranty, no cooling-off, no consumer-protection backstop.
- A PPSR check is essential — outstanding finance survives the sale and the lender can repossess the car from you.
- Prices sit below dealer money, so an independent inspection is usually the difference between a bargain and a liability.

Essential is $199, Comprehensive $329 and Elite $449, and the EV / Hybrid Battery Health add-on is $199 on top of any tier. The price is the same whether the car sits in Liverpool, Fairfield, Wetherill Park or out at Leppington and Austral — no travel loading inside the South-West.
Liverpool and the surrounding suburbs through Casula, Moorebank, Chipping Norton, Hoxton Park, Green Valley and Hinchinbrook; the Fairfield side including Cabramatta, Canley Vale, Canley Heights, Bonnyrigg, Bossley Park, Edensor Park, Prairiewood and St Johns Park; the industrial belt at Smithfield, Wetherill Park and Villawood; and the growth corridor through Prestons, Edmondson Park, Leppington, Austral and Bringelly.
Yes. The Hume Highway and Liverpool dealer strip, the yards around Warwick Farm and Moorebank, and the trade and commercial vehicle sellers through Smithfield and Wetherill Park are all part of our normal coverage. Tell the seller an independent mechanic is attending so the car is accessible and not boxed in on the lot.
Yes, and they are a large share of what we see in this region. On a work vehicle we go past the standard checklist: chassis and tray-mount condition, tow-bar and towing wiring, leaf-spring sag and axle alignment, clutch or torque-converter wear, diesel particulate filter regeneration history and soot loading, EGR and turbo condition, and whether the service intervals actually match the way the vehicle has been used.
Exactly the same way, and it is where an inspection earns its keep. A private sale is strictly as-is: no statutory warranty, no cooling-off period, no recourse. We verify the VIN and compliance plate against the registration, run the PPSR, scan every module for stored and pending fault codes, measure paint depth panel by panel, and photograph everything so you have documented evidence before any money moves.
Yes, and we report on it honestly. Aftermarket suspension, wheel and tyre packages, exhaust changes, lighting and tuning are all common here. We document what has been changed, whether the workmanship is sound, and where a modification is likely to attract a defect notice or affect insurance — but we assess the engineering and compliance risk rather than issuing any legal ruling.
A digital report with timestamped photographs of every fault, fault-code results where applicable, measured tyre and brake figures, repair-cost guidance and a plain-English Buy / Negotiate / Walk Away verdict. Comprehensive and Elite reports are delivered on site before the mechanic leaves; Essential is issued the same day.
